Save the Empire is our first attempt at a breakout / escape-the-room style game for classroom use. We hope you like it and we also hope you’ll let us know what we can do to make this game even better. We plan to make more in the future, and we only have so many friends who are willing to beta test for us. Any advice is appreciated. The product has many components which will need to be carefully and accurately assembled in order for the game to be played correctly. The product includes a flowchart of the activities the game participants will follow as they progress through the game. Also included are photos to help you assemble the game before participants play. The game begins and ends with a scenario set in Ancient Rome. All questions and puzzles are consistent with the Roman theme. The actual game-card pages consist of questions with multiple-choice answer cards, puzzles to determine lock codes, and hints for puzzles. I’ve included some blank pages in case you wish to customize anything. You will need to supply the following: 5 boxes or bags that can be locked with a padlock 1 box or bag that doesn’t need to lock 6 padlocks: 3 locks that open with a 3-digit number 1 lock that opens with a 4-digit number (You also have the option of using a fourth 3-digit lock instead of a 4-digit lock.) 1 lock that opens with a 5-letter word (I had to purchase 2 of these and swap letter dials around in order to make the correct word.) 1 lock that opens by directional movements (up, down, left, and right) Manilla Envelopes: 6 large (puzzles) 24 medium (answer choices) 6 small (puzzle hints) 100 “coins” per group (denarii) Treats for final box. Books about Ancient Rome and internet access to research answers to the questions and puzzles. Sheet protectors – optional

Get ready for the end of the year with this fun and interactive digital breakout. Students will review library skills that they have learned throughout the school year. Plus students LOVE digital breakouts so this activity is sure to keep your students engaged and learning during the last hectic days of the school year. It can also be used any time during the year as a review activity. Students will work directly in Google Classroom or Google Drive to complete these paperless activities. I recommend this breakout for students in second and third grade. This breakout is completed with Google sites. Please make sure that Google sites is not blocked on your school computers. By using Google sites there is very little preparation that needs to be done to use this with your students. Just provide students with scratch paper and a pencil so they can write down the lock codes as they work. What you need to use this breakout: Chromebooks, computers, laptops or some type of mobile device. You will need one device for each team. I recommend teams of 2-3 students if possible. The devices must be connected to the internet. A free Google account for you and your students. Scratch paper for students to write down the lock codes while they are working. What is included: The breakout is accessed through a Google Site. Students will go to the url for the site to complete the breakout. On the Google Site is the scenario, student directions, links to each of the 3 challenges and a Google form for the students to enter the lock codes. Hints for each of the 3 challenges are located on the Google form where the codes are submitted. The challenges are an online quiz, a Google forms activity and a Google slides activity. On the slides activity students will be asked to make a copy of the slide. Students will also need to complete an online jigsaw puzzle as well. PLEASE CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD A PREVIEW Skills reviewed: ⇒ Library vocabulary ⇒ Fiction and nonfiction books ⇒ Fiction and nonfiction call numbers ⇒ Genres The breakout will take approximately 45/50 minutes to complete, less time if your students are familiar with the format. You can easily do it over two class periods. VERY IMPORTANT: PLEASE CHECK YOUR DISTRICT'S FILTER. Students will need access to Google Sites to complete the activity. Sometimes a school or district will block Google Sites. Even if Google Sites works on your staff account, it is possible that student accounts are blocked. Please verify this before purchasing. ALL firewall issues that occur are on your end in your school/district restrictions. I cannot troubleshoot. Please contact me if you have any questions. How do the students Escape? There is a google Form on the home page with 6 Digital Locks. As students find solutions to the 6 puzzles, they type them into the form line under each Lock (where it says "Your Answer.") A “STILL LOCKED” message appears under each lock until the message is typed correctly. Once all 6 Locks are Solved, the students are able to click the SUBMIT button at the bottom of the Google Form to reveal a message that they have escaped. My students entered the right answer, but the form is still RED and says “STILL LOCKED!” Answers must be entered carefully and follow the small printed instructions under each lock. For example, all word/letter answers must be in ALL CAPS. 2. My students have never done an escape activity. What do you recommend? ➊Visit my Practice Escape Room: You can use a projector and demonstrate this very easy, 3 Lock Practice Escape Room or have your students spend 10-15 minutes practicing on their own. The practice site could be used the day before or immediately ahead of the actual Escape Room. ➋Use the Cheat Sheet: This printable is optional as it does lower the difficulty and remove some of the “Escape Room” thinking needed to complete the activity. The document matches each of the 6 locks to specific website images and printed materials. You can provide it at the beginning of the escape or give to groups that are 2 or 3 locks behind as you are running out of time. 3. How do students find the solutions to the Unlocks? Use the lock descriptions (Example: 10 Letter Word Lock) to determine what you are searching for. For example, if you find a clue that mentions a birthdate to research, that may be the solution to a DATE lock. Or if you find something with 8 colors to sort, that might be the answer to the 8 Color lock. As students navigate the site, they will adapt quickly to solving the puzzles. Their printed Unlocks Sheet(which also has the 6 lock descriptions) helps guide them. 4. Any tips I can give students as they search? Put a Copy of the Student Escape Tips at each station. For clue hunting...They can keep one laptop/internet device open to the Home Page at all times. All links should open in a new Tab and they should keep the tabs open while hunting for clues and solutions. Note the physical items you printed for them might require something on the Escape Website to solve that puzzle lock. As they try different solutions and find correct answers, they will type into the “Your Answer” area until STILL LOCKED disappears. They also should write the unlock solution into the Unlocks Sheet that you printed so you can judge their progress. "Distractors" will be found! (There are several "fake clues" students will find throughout the site that make it more challenging.) 5. What should I do as my students are searching for answers? You should circulate among the groups checking their progress on the Locks Blank sheet. Carry your Solutions Sheet with you (keep it covered). Periodically ask out loud for groups to announce their progress: “We have 4 locks already!” Check their progress. If a group is very far behind, make small suggestions as you determine what they are missing. If time is a problem, you can make the entire activity move faster by making small suggestions. Note: I do not let Groups share lock answers. 6. How should I use the HINT Card? I give each group one hint card and encourage them to escape without using it. Most groups try not to use their hint card as a matter of pride. I tell students that playing the Hint Card will guarantee they will get a lock of their choosing opened. I don’t just give them the solution, but do give a very revealing clue so they can quickly get it. Groups will brag to others when they have escaped and NOT used it. 7. What do I do when they Escape? I take a photo of them (sometimes they want pics, too) holding the “We Escaped!” Sign. Print a couple for the group to hold proudly. Students can complete and submit the 5 Question Reflection (on Bottom of Student Escape Tips sheet). Have an assignment for early finishers and encourage other groups to keep working. I also post the fastest times for each Escape (we do several in each course) for other groups and classes to see; I put an asterisk by the time if a Hint card was used. 8. How do you grade these? Students will turn in their group's Locks Blank with as many solutions as they discovered when I call "Time." I only give a participation Lab grade by judging the level of effort each student put forth. They all will be participating! Students can also complete and turn in a Reflection (There are 5 reflection questions on the Student Tips Sheet.) 9. How long should this take? The

There are a few factors that will determine the amount of time needed. Easy Escapes can go as fast as 30 minutes and Hard Escapes should take an hour. If you are working with first timers who did not view or use the Practice Escape, expect

So, I started a new STEM adventure and I really had no idea how my students might react. After each class completed this little task I asked for some feedback – which is kind of a dangerous thing to do with fifth graders. Nevertheless, I asked and here is what I got, “After three years of…
Students will review simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences, as well as fragments and run-ons in this sentence structure escape room that contains 64 sentences on 16 task cards. Updated 5/23 to include answer explanations for each task card. This product IS included in my escape room bundle: Secondary English Escape Room Bundle Your download includes * 32 sentences for determining sentence structure (simple, compound, complex, compound-complex) * 32 sentences for determining fragment, run-on, or correct * one practice task card to model for students how to fill in answer code * teacher & student instructions for Google and non-Google facilitation * answer key for codes and secret phrases if teacher-led * teacher tips page and link to overview instruction video * four different Google forms with four different secret phrases * underlined and labeled clauses for each task card In the Google-led facilitation (a quicker version), students input answers into a Google Form and are automatically told if their code is correct for each card and awarded a letter toward the secret phrase. There are four different Google forms that receive the same numeric codes but four different “secret phrases.” In teacher-led facilitation (a lengthier version), teachers will check answers for students and award letters toward the secret phrase. Please note: The run-ons and fragments contain errors in punctuation and structure on purpose so that students identify them as incorrect. Some of the compound sentences with short or balanced independent clauses omit the comma before the coordinating conjunction (as allowed within grammar rules) so that students see a variety of structure types and style choices. This product works best if used as a review after students are familiar with the various types of sentence structures and what makes them up. Facilitation of the game (from me giving instructions to the first group solving the secret phrase) takes anywhere from 25-40 minutes depending on grade level of students and familiarity with sentence structures and errors. Due to the complexity of the sentences, this is recommended for 9-12 graders. Want to create a customized escape room bundle for a discounted price? Before you read this product description, I invite you to sample one of my digital learning activities. These resources are great tools for teaching students to teach themselves and I believe will be of great value to science teachers. If you would like to see the product as the student will view it, please click this link: Energy Basics Learning Activity ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Product Description To use this online activity in your classroom, you will need a Google account. Students do not need a google account to use the product, buy you must have a Google account in order to set up the online version of this product. If you have questions, you can email me at [email protected]. This is a fully functional, completely digital escape room that was designed to help teach students the properties of fluids. Topics covered include: fluid definition, types of fluids, Pascal's principle, Archimedes' principle, Bernoulli's principle, Boyle's law, and Charles' law. This product contains one online delivery option and can easily be utilized for distance learning. Many of my other escape activity products contain a web page version and a version that will work on Microsoft OneNote which are not included in this product due to lower interest from buyers. If you need either of these versions, you may email me at [email protected] to request to add these options - if there is a demand, I will build these other versions. This activity is best used as a review and/or enrichment activity. It was designed as a more rigorous follow-up to my Digital Learning Activity - Phases of Matter activity. Included in this activity are two fully viable options for using the assignment in your classroom: a Google Form version that can be accessed from any internet capable device (in my opinion this is the best option for using this activity in the classroom) and a printable version that can be handed out to each student. Instructions for setting up and using each of the different versions of the escape room are included in the product download. A file containing the passwords for each page of the activity is also included. Once you begin using digital escape rooms, you will find that they are an exciting new way to provide instruction for your students. Having taught science in public schools for over 35 years, I don't get excited over many of the new techniques or activities. Most are simply repackaged versions of older ideas. Digital escape rooms are different, though. These activities teach students to solve problems, think critically and analytically, and also to read and follow directions. Students will not give up on these activities - they just keep on working. Students are challenged and are learning, but are having fun at the same time. Whether you purchase these activities or you decide to build your own, I strongly encourage teachers to get involved in using escape room activities in their classroom. This digital escape activity will challenge your students' problem solving and critical thinking skills while at the same time strengthening their understanding of the material. Students will be "playing a game" while learning. Students must read for context, answer questions, and use logic to move through the stages of this activity. When used as a small group activity, this activity can be used to provide for collaborative learning in a competitive environment. Questions in the activity may require students to remember or discover facts and interpret information to find passwords. On average, to complete this assignment will require students have 40 to 50 minutes. Simply extract the files from the .zip file and you are ready to set up your escape room. The video preview is a generic example to give you some idea of how the escape activity will work. The preview is done using the Google Forms version of the activity and the web site version or the OneNote version will vary to some degree. You can visit Great Science Stuff to see more activities like this one. If you have questions, suggestions, comments, or any problems at all I would appreciate your feedback - positive or negative. You can also me at [email protected] for more detailed information on this and other products. I'm trying to refine these projects and optimize efficiency. Thanks.
