About The Artwork A broken branch of an oak tree is probably not given special attention by many. But for children and artists it can be the beginning of a creative journey. In the artist's case, this branch was the basis of a new sculpture that follows the original form of the piece of nature, but refines it and transforms it into an organic and complex-shaped sculpture. The artist is not concerned with depicting something. The wood itself as a natural material and an aesthetic design with a play of edges and surfaces are content enough. The sculpture is thus a refined piece of nature and invites you to enjoy the look and feel. Associations are of course allowed, but this is a matter of observation. The wood is waxed and the sculpture is mounted on a dark stone slab. Above sculpture by Rieke van der Stoep - ' Crosswind ' I noticed while sourcing images for my post ' Figurines Of Intrigue ' that the figurines of the female form were in predominance, so I decided to dedicate a post purely on this theme. Most of the female ceramic figurines seem to be created by women whereas the sculptural female art forms have a more equal representation between male and female artists. On display are female art figures that capture a timeless elegance and compelling level of feminine mystique. … I saw the angel in the marble
Based in Richmond, Virginia artist Morgan Herrin transforms the most humble material—laminated construction grade 2x4s—into spectacularly detailed figurative sculptures. His choice of imagery is surreal: a noble 15th century knight melts into a network of dripping stalagmites or a classical marble bust that is overgrown with parasitic sea creatures. The resulting works are a fascinating juxtaposition of material and subject matter that require up to a year of labor to produce. Of the untitled knight piece Herrin says: Untitled (Knight) is the product of the combination of two subjects: 15th century plate armor, and geological cave structure. More

Tilman Riemenschneider (c. 1460 – 7 July 1531) During his career, Riemenschneider carved some of the most haunting and sensitive Christian images of the time. His multifarious figures of Christ, the Virgin and an array of saints were prominently displayed in churches around Germany, and their intense realism gave a sense that they lived and breathed before the attending congregations, thereby catalysing people's devotion to God. Many of Riemenschneider's works even managed to survive the aggression of the Reformation iconoclasm since they, more than any other, were considered to have the power to move people to devotion.

Furniture-maker-turned-sculptor James McNabb (previously) just opened a new exhibition of work titled Metros at Robert Fontaine Gallery in Miami. McNabb continues his exploration of architectural shapes using an improvised form of woodworking frequently described as “sketching with a bandsaw.” Without regard to the design or stability a true architect might utilize, he instead works with more abstract shapes cut from repurposed and exotic woods which in turn become component pieces for larger sculptures resembling wheels or tables.
