I am working on some word work activities for a staff development on Monday morning. A friend just shared a cute word game that was based on a Christmas theme on someone else's blog. I revamped it for St. Patrick's Day. Just add a spinner to the pot of gold, add letter cards or tiles, cut out cards, and you are good to go! Students choose a card, make the word on the card, spin the spinner, and make a new word. They can record the new words they make on their own pot of gold recording sheet. Click here to download Pot of Words. I also included a recording sheet.

We've been working through these sorts to distinguish between short and long vowels. We use a large piece of manila paper to create their own t-chart. Students begin by making a hamburger fold. Then they fold the top down like a puppet. They open up the paper to see the invisible lines that the folds made in the paper. They use a dark colored crayon to draw their own straight lines on the chart. They label the top of the chart with the titles at the top of the paper that I give them with pictures. Click the pictures to grab my set of vowel sorts.

This no prep game is designed to help students become confident adding ed and ing endings to words. The following word structures are included: ★ Words with a short vowel and one consonant after the vowel (CVC). ★ Words with a short vowel and two or more consonants after the vowel (such as CVCC). ★ Words with a silent e that is dropped before adding the ending. ★ Words with a y that is changed to an i before adding the ending. ★ Mixed words so students have to decide what do before adding the ending. Students roll a die to determine which ending to add to each word. They then read the word and write the word with the –ed or –ing ending. I find that this simple activity makes practice/reinforcement fun for students. This file includes six posters stating phonics principles, six practice sheets and a template for a die. The format of each sheet remains the same, so once kids understand the activity they can focus on mastering the skill of adding –ed and –ing endings. This resource is now also available in digital form, as a set of Boom Learning Digital Task Cards. These are self-correcting and highly engaging. If you'd like to take a look, click here.
