while up in vermont i had to make time to stop into (admittedly in paint-covered pants) one of my favorite shops in burlington: nido a perfectly edited fabric + yarn shop right downtown. the exposed brick warm winter sun streaming in the tall windows antique cabinets and wooden crates bursting with a rainbow of organic yarns favorite projects hung to inspire anna, denise, nani oh, my! and the icing on the cake- picture-perfect vignettes featuring japanese goodies and the best in crafting books it's like a little purl in the great green mountain state!
We're beginning our yarn store tour with a picturesque shop nestled in the little mountain town of Ojai, California. Cattywampus Crafts was founded by Anna and Kirk Nozaki, shortly after the couple moved to the small town to raise their adorable daughter, Naomi. Instantly inspired by Ojai's creative community, they wanted to make their own special contribution to benefit the town. Both designers, one with the knitting bug, they decided to open a yarn shop.
The most Colinette I've ever seen in one place
It should come as no surprise that I've been to a lot of yarn shops. Aside from being spoiled for choice in New York City, I try to make it to an LYS whenever I'm traveling. Even though many of us have enough yarn in our stashes to open up…
If you knit or crochet, visiting a yarn shop is a dream. You can while away the hours squidging skeins of yarn, flicking through pattern books, and...
Like me, my friend, Ellen, is a yarn-lover. And an all-around crafty-chick. So, when it came time for Ellen to visit New York City for the very first time, I knew I needed to include the best yarn shops in Manhattan on our tour. I admit it: this isn't a guide that hits every yarn
I might not be a heavy duty crocheter...(I do make some mean tassels and pom poms though) but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate some AMAZING yarn storage! Something about all those pretty colors just
It’s easy to spend an entire afternoon at Purl Soho. Cubbyhole shelves line the walls of the shop, stuffed to capacity with thousands of skeins of yarn, in every weight and color you can imagine. Martha Stewart Living touted Purl Soho, “the downtown Manhattan yarn store [that] helped make knitting a hobby as likely to be practiced by models killing time on shoots as by grandmas producing booties.” Founded in 2002 by Joelle Hoverson, Purl Soho debuted at the forefront of the contemporary craft movement, during an era where knitting think-pieces proclaimed that cozy was making a comeback, and knitting wasn’t just for grannies anymore.
What a dream to have this! 💘 **Not entirely sure exactly where this photograph originated..
Filled to the brim with all kinds of colorful yarns and projects, WEBS is a must-visit Massachusetts yarn barn.
Just sock yarn
When I was little I was running in the Cotswolds and climbing over rocks and ridges in Cornwall, when we were visting family. As a teenager I visited London a couple of times. I repeated that the last few years and also went to Brighton, Liverpool and Surrey. A connaisseur of England? Well, maybe. A fan of England? Definately! So I was rather excited to go to Newcastle for work. Not only because I didn't know the north of England so well yet, but also because the husbear was allowed to tag along. Much nicer traveling together. When I was a little girl I was always so impressed with Englands ich history, he castles, knights stories and cliffs. It really awoke my imagination. But over the last few years I discovered some modern phenomenons too in the UK that really spoke to me. Like the London Tate Modern, Newcastle has BALTIC. A modern museum in an old mill. I love the idea of repurposing. Add to that the old and new bridges over the river Tyne ánd the sun shining, and you really don't need much else, really. But there's plenty of lovely history in Newcastle, like Castle Keep where you can wonder through the small hallways and staircases. And you just can't miss Blackfriars, the oldest restaurant in England, in a gorgious 13th century friary on a lovely premesis. We ate there in the evening and it was amazing, only dished made with local produce. And also... a fantastic yarn store in the attic with amazing wools and soft sofas to sit and crochet on (or so I imagined, as I was busy being my journalist self instead if my crochet self). More yarn was spotted in many stalls in Englands oldest indoor market, Grainger Market. There were many little stalls selling yarn, notions and fabrics. Oh, how I wish we'd have this in The Netherlands. Every 2nd Saturday of the month there is a handmade market here, it would be so great to have a stall there. When I'm on the road for work my workdays are quite long, not 8 hours but sometimes even 18. To keep this up it's so important to rest well, so I am always worried/curious if the hotel that's been arranged will be okay. And oh yes, this hotel was very much okay. We stayed in Sandman Signature, at walking distance from Blackfriars and all the lovely shops. Our room was so nice and spacious and having a hot shower (rainshower!) after a long day is all you need. Every room has its own little kitchen, so you can keep your water bottles chilled and make a cupe of tea in the morning before devouring a big breakfast at the buffet. I definately recommend this hotel. Nog even geduld. Zijn jullie weleens in Newcastle geweest? Wat vonden jullie ervan? The most tips about Newcastle are already on my travel blog (Google Translate is your friend) and soon I will share advice on how to get the best from Newcastle during a Minicruise and I'll have a free cityguide up for free downloading (in Dutch). So stay tuned. Have you been to Newcastle upon Tyne and what did you like best?
My friend Cheryl left town today to visit her family in another state, so last weekend we spent a fun afternoon together having tea, exchanging Christmas gifts and checking out a new yarn shop, Wisp. We drove to Granville, a quaint town nestled in gentle hills about a 45 minute drive east of Columbus. Granville is the the home of Denison University, The Buxton Inn and the Granville Inn, all establishments of some age and esteem. Wisp is located on the north side of East Broadway, next door to a tea shop and two doors down from Goumas Confections chocolate shop. This yarn shop is so new (just 8 weeks old) that owner Anne-Sara Odor has not had time to put up a website. New or not, there was a lot of traffic in and out during the short time we were there and I can certainly see why. This little shop was a delightful, bright space filled with a colorful stock of yarn from Rowan (first photo above shows a clever display of luscious Kidsilk Haze), Blue Sky Alpacas, Spud and Chloe, Fibre Company (Road to China shown below), Malabrigo and naturally-dyed yarns by Shilasdair, imported from the Isle of Skye. I love this Shilasdair aran weight, cochineal and logwood-dyed British merino lambswool in colorway Briar rose. Yarn is displayed hanging from wires, or in cubbyholes, baskets, and glass jars. Although the selection of books, needles and other notions is small, there are many nice options available. Originally from England, proprietor Anne-Sara (too shy to be photographed) worked for a popular clothing manufacturer in Columbus for several years before taking the entrepreneurial leap. She insists she is a newer hand knitter, but these adorable baby hats and jacket show a nice touch with the needles. The shop also offers a lovely selection of home items imported from Britain, and books by a favorite author of mine, Jane Austen. I also loved that the shop had a swatch of every yarn available, an important way to let customers sample the knitted texture, drape and hand of the yarn. It might be tiny, but if you are in Central Ohio, this little gem is definitely worth the trip.

Need some advice on opening a yarn shop? This article explains exactly what you need to do to get started.
One day, Barbara and Nancy checked out another yarn shop. Lots to choose from. Some familiar brands and types... Beautiful colors. A potato chip scarf! Also on display. Needles and hooks. The prices were pretty good for Cuenca. Shop is located up the side street from Santo Domingo Church, off of Gran Colombia. Here is the door mat: -------------------------- Speaking of wool! Nancy's new friends in the countryside... A brand new baby and its Mom! So cute!
So, when I first started knitting as an adult (as in, I had to buy my own yarn, and no longer what my nana had lying around) I was massively overwhelmed. Not just the colours, but the different mat…

Making Plans blanket knitting pattern is easy to knit with worsted or Aran #4 weight yarn. The pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes: baby blankets, crib blanket, large throw, XL and XXL afghan. I used Blue Sky Fibers 'Sweater' yarn... it's a lovely yarn with great stitch definition.
Een paar weken geleden liet iemand het me op Instagram weten: er was een nieuwe wolwinkel in Utrecht open en moest ik daar niet eens even langs? Mijn oortjes gingen overeind staan. A couple of weeks ago someone tagged me on Instagram. There was a new yarn shop in Utrecht, and had I visited it yet? My heart skipped a beat. A brand new yarn shop? In my own little Utrecht! Now that's wonderful news, as it's really what the city needed I think. And that's why I visited this brand new yarn shop Sticks & Cups last weekend. The big opening of this store will take part on October 1st, but until then the doors are wide open, the yarns are stashed up hight and outside there are some comfy benches to crochet or nit on, or have some coffee. There used to be a vintage shop in this historical shop in Utrecht and the venue is just amazing. A must-go if you ever visit Utrecht. As soon as you walk into the store you'll get a very warm welcome from the owner Lili, who fled Iran when she was 4 years old to come to The Netherlands with her parents. She is passionate about everything yarn and her enthusiasm is very catching. She loves knitting, crocheting and spinning. Lili emphasises on yarn originated from The Netherlands, so you'll find lots of Scheepjes yarns and hand dyed yarn by Dutch indie dyers at Sticks & Cups, as well as a whole collection of Lopi yarns. Lili is hoping to have the back of the store completely filled with indie yarns soon. I was immediately attracted to cupboard with Scheepjes Stonewashed, but the fine flittery yarn was also amazingly beautiful. Hopefully I'll be able to make the grand opening on October 1st. Lily also told me that she'll organise knit ins, on Thursday nights after the big opening and I think that's so clever. We don't have anything similar in town and I do feel Utrecht needs this. Hopefully I'll be able to join the knit ins often, and Lily won't mind me crocheting instead of knitting. You'll find Sicks & Cups in Telingstraat no. 11. If you're visiting Utrecht during your trip through The Netherlands, I have written up an article about Utrecht in English with loads of hints and tricks for you.

Our second yarn store tour takes us just outside of the bustling city of Chicago, to the town of St. Charles. It's here that Angela Busby made her childhood dream a reality by opening a yarn store called Wool & Co.
