This process makes good sense to us and we likely feel pretty comfortable with it. I wonder though, how comfortable we feel with asking for and receiving feedback on our own practice? […]

I am so excited to be introducing you to an amazing blogger! Her blog was one of the first that I followed and her button one of the first I added to my page. I know you will enjoy this post today! She has even offered a freebie at the end! Using Foldables Hi, I’m Hooty from Hooty’s Homeroom and I’m guest blogging today. I want to share my love of foldables with you. I am so thankful that Dinah Zike created the concept of interactive notetaking. She is amazing! I use foldables so much in my classroom that it becomes second nature to my kids. I can hand them a piece of paper and tell them what kind of foldable I want and they go right to town. It does take time for 3rd graders to become folding masters so I like to start the year off with templates. One of the templates I use the most is for flaps. The number of flaps I use varies depending on the information being learned. I’ve added flaps to composition books and to other projects such as paper bag books and envelope books. This is a science foldable we added to our paper bag matter books. I had the kids describe the properties of a Tootsie Roll using their 5 senses. I created this map elements template to use in our map book created from a manila envelope. This rounding template was added to our math journals. I plan to use this prefix template when we study prefixes this year. There are so many uses for flaps in note taking. I’m including a flap template for you if you’re interested in giving it a try. There are text boxes for you to type in or you can delete the text and add clip art. The template is in Word format. When viewed through Google Drive the formatting looks off but it downloads correctly. Here’s the link: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B1xk-q-bbknYeHZfUXYtYXppNTA I have been teaching for 19 years and have taught 2nd-5th grades. I've spent the last 8 years teaching 3rd grade in a rural title 1 school in Texas. I love using technology in the classroom and at home. I have been bitten by the journaling/notebooking bug. I think Dinah Zike is amazing! I'm married to a high school English teacher and have two wonderful daughters. My free time is spent blog hopping and reading. I recently added coaching soccer to my list. What was I thinking?! Even though I really want to simplify my life, I've decided to add blogging to my already hectic life. You only live once, right? I {puffy heart} love these ideas! I admit that I hadn't realized all of the wonderful manipulatives you can create from office supplies! Head on over to Hooty's Homeroom and follow her amazing blog! You won't regret it!
I absolutely love teaching poetry! That explains why I teach it ALL year! Each month I focus on TWO types of poetry and then during POETRY MONTH, we review all of our work, create poetry portfolios for a review, and have a POETRY SLAM! Read on for details! 1. BULLETIN BOARD At the beginning of the year, make a bulletin board to display posters of the different types of poetry. Leave a space below each one to place a student example. Review it with your class and tell them by the end of the year, they will have written an example of all the types. For the time being, put a little sign under each type of poetry that says something like, "Under Construction" or "Coming Soon!" I place a large 12" X 18" black piece of construction paper under the posters. 2. MONTHLY POEMS Each month, introduce a new type of poem and teach the rules for that poem. If you created a bulletin board like above, add a student example. The following order works well for upper elementary! August- Couplets and Quatrains September- Acrostic and Cinquain October- Haiku and Humorous November- Diamante and Informative December- Free Verse and Concrete January- Narrative and Lyrical February- BioPoem and Ballad March- Limerick and Parody April- Review and Poetry Portfolios (see below) May- Poetry Slam 3. POETRY AND LYRICS ANALYSIS In addition to introducing a new type of poetry each month, also choose a poem or song to analyze each month. I actually try to do two of these a month - one regular poem and one song to analyze the lyrics. Students love the musical feature and I start to see them wiggle in their seats and try to sing the songs. I allow them to sing and even dance to the songs. Any little thing to get them excited about learning poetry! I love when they say, "My dad likes that music!" or "Who is that?" Use the following elements of poetry when analyzing poems! Alliteration- Ex. Slimy slugs slither slowly on the sidewalk. Imagery- Ex. The thick fuzzy coat was a blessing in the winter blizzard. Metaphor- Ex. A good laugh is sunshine in a house. Onomatopoeia- Ex. Bang, ding, pop! Personification- Ex. The wind whistled its happy tune. Repetition- Ex. Leaving my friends, leaving my home leaving my room, leaving my memories Rhyme- Ex. School, tool, rule Rhyme Scheme- Ex. Roses are red A data-blogger-escaped-comment-StartFragment Violets are blue B Sugar is sweet C And so are you. B Rhythm- (musical quality) Simile- Ex. She was as pale as a lump of sugar. Stanza- (a poetry paragraph) Theme- (the message) Tone- (feeling) Grab these free poetry study cards! 4. POETRY PORTFOLIO At the end of the year, I like to have students create their own Poetry Portfolio. Basically, they get out their notes from throughout the year or I supply them with directions. Since it is a review, I don't usually teach the rules for each of the poems. I either give it as a class project in centers or homework. If you don't have time for your class to write new poems for each different type, save the poems throughout the year and create a portfolio of poems. 5. POETRY SLAM Finish off the year with a Poetry Slam! Oh yeah! Students love to share their work and this way they can show ownership and pride of their hard work. 1. Allow your students to relax around the room and enjoy listening to poetry from their fellow classmates or set up chairs for them. It can be formal or informal! 2. Set up a schedule so students know the order of when to share their poems. 3. Have a special author's chair? Use it! 4. Do you have iPads, tablets, video cameras? Have the student videotape! I have my students rotate. After they present, they go to the video chair. That way each student gets the experience of both being the videographer and the presenter! AND parents absolutely love to see these videos! Thank you for visiting! Come back to get some more amazing ideas from Upper Elementary Snapshots!!!! If you need poetry resources, click below! It’s the end of the year and your drowning in end of the year duties and paperwork…. BUT you can’t stop thinking about the excitement of next school year. I get it- you are not alone! Here are some tips for getting prepared for next school year. 1) Reflecting On The Classroom Management & Organization ... Read More about 5 Tips Planning For Next School Year
At the beginning of last year, I asked my students to fill in a "get to know you" questionnaire as they entered my room on the second day of school. On it, I had some personalish (I know that isn't a word, but I am feeling rebellious today ;) ) questions such as list your favorite food, what is something I should know about you, what you do at home, etc...The purpose of this was just to give me a little insight into the CHILDREN that my new students were. Here are a few of them. Now, you might be asking, what does this have to do with anything? Well, let me tell you, I actually did use these for something! At the end of the year, for my parting "gift" to my students, I used them to help me write "The Important Thing" pages for them! If you have been following my blog from the beginning (or even have just read back to the first few entries) you will know how much I love The Important Book. I do so much with it, from learning about reference books, or just writing letters to people. It truly is an amazing book to use in the classroom. Since we had been using it so much in class, I thought it fitting to create an "Important Book" page for each student to remember their year with me. Using the cards as my starting point, I thought of the ONE thing that stuck out to me about this student. For example, this student was such a great friend to everyone in class. She is the one who I could count on to help others and be welcoming. So the first line of her poem read: "The important thing about ______ is that she is an amazing friend to everyone." Next, I used the card to fill in the rest of the poem. The poem for this student went something like this: "The important thing about ____ is that she is an amazing friend. It is true that she studies hard in math and loves to play games online and enjoys crawling around with her brother. She likes things that are hot pink, is a great speller, and could play basketball all day. ______ is allergic to nuts, but not pasta and loves to go to Harns Ranch to eat. She also a wonderful class participant and a great partner to have. But the important thing about _______ is that she is an amazing friend." I can't tell you how ECSTATIC my students were to get these. The smiles were a mile wide...one even started to cry! I think because we had given so many of these to our volunteers and other people, they never entertained the idea that they would get one about themselves. It truly was a great end of the year gift for them. And best of all, it cost me nothing. Here are a few documents for you, in case you want to do something like this next year. First off, I made my cards on Vista Print, but here is a sheet for you to use. Then, here is the sentence frame for the Important Book that I used. And that is it. I know this takes a bit of planning (I mean, you do have to have the students fill in the cards at the beginning of the year and hold on to them!) but the smiles and reactions from the kids were well worth the effort! *NOW EDITABLE! This is a fun activity to do in the early days of school. My students love it and always want to play it more than once. Basically, each student has a mini-bag of M&M’s and, depending on which color they draw out, they tell different things about themselves. Students first play in a large group with the visual display on the SMART Board, and then return to their table groups to play in small groups. *UPDATED* Now includes an editable version, and comes with paper “candy” if you can’t use real candy at your school! Based on requests, The M&M Game is now editable, as long as you have PowerPoint. This allows you to play the game throughout the year for different purposes. Use in reading groups for different types of comprehension questions. Use whole-group to review categories of content information before testing. Use with other teachers at a staff meeting. The possibilities are endless! If you have already purchased this product, please download again to get the revised file! This file comes in 3 formats: Smart Notebook, PDF and Editable PowerPoint. There is also a version with British spelling, (favourite vs. favorite). **Check out my other ice-breaker activity, The Cupcake Game If you enjoy this file, I would love to hear feedback!
