3月8日は「3=みつ 8=はち」で、「みつばちの日」。 全日本はちみつ協同組合と日本養蜂はちみつ協会（現、一般社団法人日本養蜂協会）が制定しました。ミツバチは、およそ一万年前の新石器時代の洞窟壁画にも採蜜の様子が描かれているほど遠い昔から人類に利用されてきました。5000年前には養蜂もはじまっていたとされ、人類にとってもっとも重要な家畜昆虫だといえます。ミツバチが人にもたらす恵みは、蜂蜜は言うまでもなく、蝋燭や医療製品、化粧品、美術工芸品と幅広い用途を持つ巣の構築材の蜜蝋、花粉から精製されるローヤルゼリー、優れた防腐・殺菌効果があるプロポリス…さらには世界中の農作物の主要農産品の70%の受粉をミツバチが媒介していると言われ、人間にとってミツバチは計り知れないほどの「大恩虫」なのです。
