Portraits by LA-based artist Jospeh Lee.
Based in Seoul, Korea, Kyuin Shim is a digital artist and sculptor who executes dark and poignant visions by altering the human body. His latest sculptural series "Black Black" features several monochromatic renditions of mannequin-like figures whose bodies seem to disintegrate before one's eyes. In Korean, the title of the series has two meanings: "Black" and "Sound of Crying." The characters' flesh becomes consumed by bubbling matter that eventually turns into a downpour of water from their limbs and orifices. A recent series of digital 3D renderings, "Small Place," similarly abstracts the human body, this time in all white. Featuring different groupings of feet sticking out from under a cubicle-like prism, the piece evokes the smothering closeness of an unhealthy relationship. Take a look at some of Shim's work below.

One of England’s most versatile and inventive artists of the postwar era, Hockney became widely known in the 1960s for his vivid landscapes, domestic scenes, and intimate portraits born in California. The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020 marks his third series documenting the blossoming of spring, having done his first in 2011 and the second in 2013. For this latest project, he observed the richness of the season from the bucolic surroundings of rural Normandy. Working en plein air (in the open air), he spent his days scrutinizing and recording the subtle, daily changes in the plants and light as spring emerged and took hold with all its drama and glory. The plein air approach was particularly fitting for his endeavor due to Normandy’s associations with the origin of French Impressionism. As Hockney noted, Monet witnessed and recorded 40 springs in nearby Giverny. However, unlike his Impressionist predecessors and in keeping with his long-held embrace of contemporary technology (he has used fax machines, laser photocopiers, and other 20th- and 21st-century digital instruments throughout his six-decade career), Hockney used the medium of the iPad for The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020.

The grotesque miniatures of Korean sculptor Dongwook Lee are not for everyone, and yet his work stems from what he describes as a basic concern for all human beings. Previously featured here on our blog, the Seoul, Korea based artist's figures are small-scale sculptural works, most measuring no more than 12" inches high made of Polymer clay, that typically depict contorted human forms. He embodies the idea of physical "likeness" in his most recent sculptures, featuring humanoids with growths of pink-colored mushrooms and massive, heavy lumps of flesh that they are forced to carry.

Iranian painter Salman Khoshroo uses a palette knife and sizable layers of paint to create the emotive portraits in his recent series, “White on White.” In contrast to his previous work that relied on swirling reds, blues, and yellows, Khoshroo’s latest impasto pieces are monochromatic. Starting with a hunk of paint, the artist then forms the portrait’s outline before shaping the rest of the face that lacks distinct physical features. More

Multi-disciplinary artist Wilhelm Sasnal explores contemporary visual culture by working with found images sourced from newspapers, magazines, and the internet. Sasnal’s paintings juxtapose broad swirling brush strokes with precise, flatly rendered details. Abstracted landscapes surround small human and animal figures in limited color palettes. Although the artist frequently works in oil on canvas, his work also spans acrylic and watercolor paintings and filmmaking. In an artist statement on Hauser and Wirth gallery’s website, Sasnal explains, “I think images aren’t important because of the numbers that surround us. More
