Lesson Overview: During this lesson, children will be learning about Samuel Morse's invention of the telegraph, the use of Morse code and how the telegraph changed the ways individuals communicated in the past and present. The children will be analyzing the importance of having a universal code to communicate, and why it might be beneficial to do so in case of an emergency. Through the integration of technology, the children will be able to create their own messages using Morse code and try to decode secret messages their classmates have written for them. I believe that children need to be exposed to a variety of ways in which to communication, and the learning of Morse code both provides historical relevance for students, and can also teach students ways to communicate in dangerous situations.
