UCL Neuroscience Society - Tangled Moods by Emma Major Since my bipolar diagnosis I have railed against, analysed, and started the process of acceptance. This Zentangle (a form of art therapy) captures my complex experiences of living with bipolar disorder; it speaks of my moods, my fears, my creativity, and my life in all its fullness. When accompanied by the following poem, it also expresses how I feel living with bipolar disorder in society. Bubble wrap Protecting all I am From all that might scare In the dark before the dawn Bubble wrap Shutting myself away Not letting many get too close My mind is not a game to play. The process of producing this piece of art and accompanying poem has been therapeutic; a gift for my mental health. Now, as I look at the outcome, I can see my emotions alive in all their variations, something to be celebrated and harnessed rather than controlled and hidden

UCL Neuroscience Society - The Grass Is Greener Where You Water It by Emma Louise Rhixon For my work I wanted to play with the analogy that the mind is a garden. A mind must be tended to, looked after, and cultivated, just like a garden. Both physically and emotionally, we need to nurture our brain in order for it to stay healthy, and if we care for it, it will become a beautiful brilliant thing. And though a mind strives on challenges, it must also not be given more than it can take, just as a flower can be given too much water and wither. In my collage I wanted to explore the possibility of illustrating a mind through this analogy, with a completely varied array of flora growing from the girl’s head. Though she looks pallid and possibly sickly, she has a beautiful garden of a mind that simply needs to be cared for to bloom

UCL Neuroscience Society - A Solitary Thing by Isabelle Erbacher Mental illness is an incredibly disabling, isolating problem that affects a frightening proportion of our population. Although it is well known that countless people struggle with it, it makes the individual feel alone and hopeless, and it can seem as though there is nobody who can help, or understand, or give some comfort. It is a solitary thing. But every person out there who is experiencing mental health problems must know that they are not alone, that there is hope, and that others do understand. Yes, mental illness isolates people from the crowd, and unfortunately stigmatisation still contributes to the burden this places on sufferers. But times are changing, and there are so many people out there trying to make a difference, like the mental health charity SANE. The fight against mental illness is one that shouldn’t be fought alone. So let’s all take a moment every now and then, and make a difference to the people that are close to us. One step at a time

UCL Neuroscience Society - Scape I by Ed Christie Through abstracting sketches of natural or urban scenes that I have been positively affected by, I aim to paint spaces that are reminiscent of their original settings. By painting abstractly I try to make my works more universally accessible as I avoid depictions of specific places. I further encourage engagement with my paintings through exploring composition, texture and colour. In doing this, I aim to evoke a sense of energy and positivity that could be compared to profound or ‘sublime’ experiences of the world. In my paintings I try to remind viewers of the beauty that surrounds them in both rural and urban spaces. I feel that this can be of immense benefit to people’s mental health, as through engaging with the spaces in which they live, they can gain an appreciation for their surroundings, whilst benefitting from interacting with the colours and textures that constantly surround them

UCL Neuroscience Society - A Radiograph of Mental Illness - In saggital plane by Austin Apollo Tse The brain and mental health are complicated, and I aim to simplify them through my artwork. The gentleness of the pastel draws a parallel to the nature of the brain. Mental illness is a disorder in the brain’s communication with our senses. The basis of these problems may be genetic, carried with us from birth to present, or, they may be manipulated by our minds. And in patients with such problems, they show subtle signs of asking for help, if we are careful to look for them. A message: open our minds...to mental health

UCL Neuroscience Society - Crawling Lilacs (Infestation) by Amelia Smith The world appears different in times of troubled mental health. This is partly what I wanted to portray in the painting - brain states on the inside interfering with life on the outside. In times of anxiety, depression or disordered mental state, the external world might seem strange, clouded, distant, hostile. Especially when isolated, it can become increasingly difficult to distinguish the troubles of the world from the troubles of the mind and brain. The insect-like neurons reflect negative patterns of thought; scuttling around, circling, entangling merging with her appearance, distorting her perception and identity. Mental health problems should not define who a person really is. These troubles can be seen as an infestation of the brain, not as a part of the self. I have hope that greater understanding of the brain in mental illness will find new ways to drive the insect away, break the cycle and, in turn, improve the lives of those suffering from such debilitating but still frequently misunderstood conditions
