Though she had no formal training in art, her family soon recognised her natural imaginative talent and encouraged her at home. In 1903, when only 15, Ida had several fairy drawings published in The New Idea and had designed and illustrated a number of Christmas cards. Her first book illustrations were for Mollie’s Bunyip, which was published when was the grand old age of 16! These were quickly followed by illustrations for many books, most written by her sister Annie, and her husband, Grenbry Outhwaite.
