Josef Albers ( 1888 - 1976 ) was a German born artist and educator whose work, both in Europe and The United States formed the basis of Modern Art education programs of The 20th Century. Albers was a student at The Bauhaus in 1920, later being invited by the founder Walter Gropius to become an educator at the school. There his students included established artist Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. In the 1930's Albers emigrated to The United States where he would become the head of the new art school Black Mountain College, and later in the 1950's he became the head of the department of design at Yale University. His students in America included Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Richard Anuszkiewicz, and Eva Hesse among others. Accomplished as a designer, photographer, typographer, printmaker, and poet, Albers is best remembered for his work as an Abstract painter and an invaluable contributor as an art theorist of color theory. He is considered to be one of the most influential artists of The Twentieth Century. Artworks by Albers are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums. Albers many visits to Latin America had a profound impact on his art and theoretical writings. The exhibition " Josef Albers in Mexico " reveals the complex and often surprising roles of place, time, and spirituality in Alber's body of work. His encounters with Pre Columbian monuments sparked a creative outpouring, reinvigorating his paintings and stimulating new experiments in photography that until this exhibition has rarely been seen.
