Early Chrsitian apologist and philosopher. Wrote to emperor Antoninus Pius to defend the morality of the Christian life and persuade him to end his persecution of them. Claimed Plato and other pre-Christian Greek philosophers as Christian in their behaviour despite not knowing Christianity itself. Started a school in Rome. In the reign of Marcus Aurelius he was denounced to the authorities and executed along with several students.
