What’s that? You’ve never heard of Mondia? Well, perhaps you’re aware of its sister brands Movado and Zenith? Founded in the early 1900s, Mondia was a small, independent Swiss watch company making boutique watch lines for the first 60-plus years of its existence before eventually switching its focus to more mass-market production. That change in vision brought Movado-Zenith calling, after which the 3 brands formed the appropriately named Movado-Zenith-Mondia group. With a history like that, it’s a little strange that Mondia isn’t a more commonly known brand. But look at it like this - it’s a great way to get a fantastic piece with heritage at a fraction of the price that a similarly aged Movado or Zenith would cost. And this like-new chronograph from the '60s, with its funky-as-hell dial and gold-capped case, is as cool as they come. “Teach us to pray,” Jesus’ disciples asked him. This seems a strange request from men who were undoubtedly devout in their faith. They prayed and heard prayers being said at the temple. They listened to the prayers of their ancestors read from the scriptures. They had been following Jesus, for goodness sake, and observed him praying.…

The Supremes gave the world numerous number one hits with songs that were stylish, that bridged the worlds of pop and soul. Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, together with his music production team, created the Motown Sound, a style of soul music with a distinct pop influence. These songs were hits beyond America, and were heard in dance clubs and radio stations throughout America and as far as Asia, such as “Back in My Arms Again”, “Where Did Our Love Go,” “Baby Love,” “Come See About Me”, “Stop! In the Name of Love”, “You Can’t Hurry Love,” “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” “Love Is Here and Now You’re Gone,” “The Happening,” “Love Child”, “Someday We’ll Be Together”, to name a few. The Supremes rose from the poverty of Detroit’s Brewster housing project to become Motown’s most consistent hitmakers and the most popular female group of the Sixties. This milestone is all the more impressive because it occurred at the height of the British Invasion—a period when beat groups from abroad, (notably the Beatles), otherwise ruled the charts. The Supremes were America’s ingénues, exuding a stylish charm and soulfulness that appealed across the board to black and white listeners at a time when racial divides were coming down. Known in-house as Motown’s “sweethearts,” Berry Gordy saw the potential in them from the beginning. “All three girls had qualities so unique I’d often think: ‘If they could make us feel the way we do, what could they do to the world at large?’” he wrote in his autobiography, To Be Loved. (Rock & Roll, Hall of Fame). Introduction to Harry Adams: Harry Adams (b. 1918, Arkansas – d. 1988, Los Angeles ) was one of the best-known members of the Los Angeles African American community. Adams worked as a freelancer for the California Eagle and Los Angeles Sentinel for 35 years. He trained at the California School of Photography and Graphic Design and although he took these photographs as part of his journalistic assignments, his artistic ability to capture the essence of a particular moment in time earned him the moniker “One Shot Harry”. His collection is particularly rich in its images of the prominent African Americans who defined his era, but also of ordinary life, documenting social life, schools, civil rights organizations, protests, and cultural events. “His work is not only a contribution to journalism, but also part of our history.” LA Times. I love to read but it is one thing that has been hard to prioritize since our move. I kept putting off that quiet "me time" partly because I didn't have a book on my
Vinyl LP pressing, The Nobel Prize-winning physicist Dennis Gabor once claimed that, the future can't be predicted, but it can be invented. He died right as the synthesizer came into vogue, but still somehow aptly described Zoospa, the first full-length innovation from J-E-T-S. J-E-T-S is Jimmy Edgar and Travis Stewart (Machinedrum), two of the past decades most versatile and protean producers, who have artfully glided through techno, house, IDM, bass, hip-hop, R&B, and pop without being pinned down to any one of them. Their onlycommitment has been to lucidly fuse the mutant strains of the past into the vaguelyfamiliar present. No ideas are original, but they're singularly creative artists who could only comfortably exist in modern chaos, the strange invented future. Released on Innovative Leisure, Zoospa is fiercely cohesive but wildly varied. It's a group effort casting a wide net of brilliant collaborators (DAWN, Mykki Blanco, KingJet, Rochelle Jordan, Tkay Maidza), but ultimately guided by the auteur visions of Edgar and Machinedrum. If many all-time great duos are guided by a competitive rivalry, J-E-T-S discard that sensibility to form a unified whole. If not in sound, they channel the two-heads-one-brain spirit of a more danceable Autechre or Outkast raised on the Belleville Three and first wave IDM. If you heard Timbaland and The Neptunes in 1999, this is what you'd expect pop music to sound like 20 years later.
