"It's better to be strange than plain," says my glamorous grandmother. Another fabulous phrase of hers is: "It's good to be different." Her bedroom is mauve and gold. A painted portrait of herself, in her forties I would guess, in an ornate golden frame, showcases itself on the first wall you see when you enter the luxurious abode with sliding doors to the pool, a deep oval bath tub, a desk with a view, a fainting couch for reading, a walk-in closet and more. All my life my grandmother's master suites have been ridiculously epic and large, fluffy and formal. So...this is actually Queen Marie Antoinette's bedroom in Versailles, but trust me, not much different from my grandmother's. My grandfather was an engineer, so he loved the latest of everything, and my grandmother is a romantic woman who adores Paris. Now, I realize that it's their combination of qualities that produced such blissful sanctuaries. My grandfather was a realist who liked the heavy things in life like the sea, good food, dark and wooden furniture, the Opera and the newest technology. My grandmother, however, loves literature, film, her pool, silk flowers, powders and high heels for at-home. Here, Kristen Dunst plays a marvelous interpretation of the historical figure, Queen Marie Antoinette. The movie, directed by Sofia Coppola, is a definite must-see for Rococo inspiration, drama and sweets. Keeping her bathroom fresh, white, light gray marble makes the poster of a French Rococo painting pop out. It looks even more special in this out of place spot and somehow makes for the perfect cherry on top. "Idyllic," yet "natural," "drenched," while "light" and "elaborate," "plump," "pink," and "precious." I've heard all these words used to describe the luscious and regal design style called, Rococo. It's not necessarily a look you want for your family room or poolside patio, but the celestial style carries with it treats that can enliven and add drama to a space's decor pallet. [adrotate banner="29"] During the 18th century, Rococo blossomed out of the end of the Baroque design style period, which was an ornate, sensory-driven and free from the confines of proportion. Baroque colors seem to be warm and overall darkly hued: Rococo, unlike its mother, Baroque, is more softly colored, wan even, however its roots from Baroque still appear ample in terms of lavishness and abundance: Both these styes in their purest forms have the potential to awe as well as overwhelm or confine. But the magic of Rococo shines in its details, and as a detail itself in a modern home, Rococo offers a spice thats irreplaceable by any other decor. Rococo is a style with the ability to elicit heavenly appeal on earth. A Rococo lamp on an end table is lighter than white chocolate mousse but richer than a pot of gold. Ways to Use the Overstated Rococo Decor Style in an Understated Form 1. Picture frames or mirror frames. 2. An accent chair. 3. Lighting. 4. Rococo relief on a wall or furniture piece. This up-to-date sleek kitchen flourishes from just a touch of Rococo on its island. 5. A Console table. 7. Curtains. 8. A Rococo inspired washroom. 9. A Rococo art piece. Doesn't that rose just bring out the lovely Rococo pink in her nose? Why isn't every cow dressed so beautifully? :) See if Rococo can make your home even sweeter than it already is...
