🦁 Guardian's Gaze - The Protective Allure of the Fu Dog Venture into a blend of awe and art with this giclée print, capturing the majestic snarl of a fu dog. Dominated by golden yellow, with swirling patterns of magenta, blue, and pink, this 10x20” piece speaks of protection, bravery, and tradition. An antiqued background creates a contrast, with ink extending beyond, like the guardian's influence, extending past visible realms. Inspired by traditional Japanese tattoo art from my appprenticeship.
Empress Dowager Cixi's Secret Porcelain Foo Dogs Collection - Zhang by Daniel Arrhakis (2023) Empress Dowager Cixi, born Yehe Nara Xingzhen (29 November 1835 – 15 November 1908), was a Chinese noblewoman of the Manchu Yehe Nara clan, concubine and later regent who effectively controlled the Chinese government in the late Qing dynasty for almost 50 years, from 1861 until her death in 1908. By maintaining authority over the Manchu imperial house (Qing dynasty, 1644–1911/12), she became one of the most powerful women in the history of China. Cixi took the initiative and invited several women to spend time with her in the Forbidden City. Katharine Carl, an American painter, was called to China in 1903 to paint Cixi's portrait for the St. Louis Exposition. Katharine Carl (* ) spent nine months in China in 1903 painting a portrait of the Empress Dowager Cixi, On her return to America, she published a book about her experience, titled With the Empress Dowager of China. In her book, Carl portrays Cixi as a kind and considerate woman for her station. Carl also wrote of the empress dowager's love of dogs and of flowers, as well as boating, Chinese opera and her Chinese water pipes and European cigarettes. But what she never mentioned was a series of photographs that she took during those months in the palace of the Empress's private collection of porcelain Foo Dogs. Her love for dogs and flowers was evident in this collection of unique Chinese porcelain that disappeared without a trace. What remains were the old black and white photos that, using algorithm of image transformation from grayscale image to color methods, allowed us to get a glimpse of this unique collection, which I present to you here in this series. As for the original photos, however, they also disappeared... without a trace... perhaps lost in the timelines and imagination! I hope you like it ! : ) (*) Katharine Augusta Carl (February 12, 1865 – December 7, 1938) (sometimes spelled Katherine Carl) was an American portrait painter and author. She made paintings of notable and royal people in the United States, Europe and Asia. __________________________________________________ The foo dog in Feng Shui is a symbol of protection when used in pairs outside of a front door.
