The aftermath of the Irk Valley Junction rail crash of 15 August 1953. The crash occurred at 7.40am when an electric train on route to Manchester from Bury collided with a steam train heading to Bacup. The Manchester bound train had passed a stop signal and collided head on with the steam train. The front carriage of the former was overturned and breached a wall before falling 40 feet to the riverbank below. The crash claimed the lives of the driver of the electric train and nine of his passengers. The keen eyed might just spot a police officer on the left of the frame on the street below the scene but the Manchester City Police and other emergency services were at the centre of the rescue and recovery operation.
