Yumi Okita's over-sized cloth moths are a delight. They bring to mind Mosura (Mothra), the giant fuzzy moth from the "Godzilla" films! I am also reminded of another unusual plush toy animal: years and years ago, my best friend/roommate and I went to visit the then-new Monterey Bay Aquarium here in Northern California. In the gift shop, they had racks and racks of all the expected stuffed animals, all the cute and cuddly ones like otters, pelicans, seals, dolphins, even whales. And then she spotted it: a plush toy sting ray, all flat and evil. She just had to have it! I still marvel at what an odd choice it was to make a ray into a stuffed animal. Who gave that the green light at the toy factory? Yumi Okita's Etsy store: https://www.etsy.com/shop/irohandbags

Nicole Havekost describes her towering figures as exhibiting the contradiction of “sublime embarrassment… Bodies are magical and glorious and gross and bewildering. Bodies are civilized and feral.” Through hand-sewn sculptures, the Rochester-based artist explores the ways aging affects peoples’ figures and the emotional process of adjusting to a new reality. She stitches large anthropomorphic works from industrial felt, shaping bodies that are bulging and covered with knots and uneven seams that serve as a reminder of restoration. More

About The Artwork My work is usually about the fragile balance between men and nature. I find inspiration in the delicate structures of the microscopic world and in the cycle of growth, flowering and decay. I play with the coexistence of attraction and repulsion, allowing the objects to evoke positive and negative feelings. I am known for my tactile approach, playing with texture, experimental techniques and organic shapes. Pods #6698 is a unique piece from the Pods series. Two pieces (35 x 22 x 12 cm and 120 x 40 x 20 cm) are combined. The bright ocher color is vibrant and evokes a positive feeling. The piece can be hung on the wall in different ways, on a hanging hook or nail. About The Artwork This artwork is about exploring new ways of love, new forms of being, new connections in this world. How to be both soft and hard, how to marry extremes in oneself. I knitted various shapes, took them apart, put them back together in new ways, took them apart again, built new connections. I did it for quite a while until suddenly it connected and became one whole. This artwork uses a wooden stretcher as a foundation, wire and woven ribbons define the grid, knitted elements are woven into the piece. Textiles in various textures wrap the wood and are reinforced by cement and paint. I do not often post dolls on 'theartroomplant', I find them quite disturbing, usually, and it is rare that they appeal to me. Cecile Perra's fabric sculptures featuring her collage techniques are disturbing but they are also fascinating I love their amorphous shapes and the combination of stitch and photography.
