This captivating abstract print captures the serene beauty of sailing boats on Loch Lomond, bathed in the golden glow of sunset. The piece is a vibrant symphony of colour and shape, where the natural splendour of the Scottish landscape meets a dream-like interpretation. The artwork features bold geometric forms cutting through the canvas; triangles and rectangles merge to create the iconic silhouettes of the sails and hulls of the boats. The reflections in the tranquil water are rendered through a mosaic of shifting tones, suggesting a dance of light and shadow beneath the vessels. Dominating the background is an expansive sun, depicted with radiant beams that stretch across the sky, transitioning from a warm amber to a soothing lavender at the edges. This lends the scene a feeling of calm and warmth, evoking the peacefulness of a late summer evening. Mountains rise gently in the distance, their outlines softened into the horizon line, further emphasising the sense of depth and space in this abstract portrayal. The contrast of the fiery sky against the cool blues of the water creates a visual journey for the eye, guiding viewers through the tranquil expanse of Loch Lomond at this magical hour. This print is a part of the 'Loch Lomond' collection, celebrating the timeless beauty of one of Scotland's most picturesque locations through the lens of abstract art. It's an invitation to step away from the literal and embrace an expressive interpretation that continues to resonate with the peace and tranquillity of a Scottish sunset over water.

St. Louis-based artist Ali Cavanaugh paints dreamlike watercolors of female subjects on wet clay panels. She refers to her works as “modern frescos,” due to their similarity to the fresco-secco style of painting, and the luminosity she creates through a method of layering translucent pigments on bright white surfaces. In each portrait Cavanaugh aims to paint the minute details of her subject’s physical appearance, while also evoking a “tender unseen presence that transcends understanding in the depth of a soul.” Her work is currently included in the group exhibition Painting the Figure Now at the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art in Wausau, Wisonsin through September 28, 2018. Since my last painting, life has been a bit hectic, but I did want to produce something half reasonable after the less than successful experimental work . Because it has been so busy, I am afraid I did not take the time to photograph the various stages. I will try to give a brief outline of how I proceeded. I began with the background colours except the bright red in the middle. I needed this to be as clean as possible so avoided adding it to the initial wash. When I was satisfied with the initial was, remembering that it would dry considerably lighter, I covered the wet paint, (Indigo, Apatite Green Genuine, Quinachridone Rust and Cadmium Yellow ) with a well crumpled sheet of cling film. I allowed it to dry completely and then added the passage of Pyroll Red through the middle. Again, I allowed it to dry. I then simply used the shapes created by the cling film to paint in the hips and the leaves, varying the amount of colour as much as possible to create some depth in the painting. I did try to wash out a little the lower edge of the red wash, but it is such a staining pigment, that I had little success. I will have to live with it.
