A couple of weeks back I went to London for a few days to catch up with friends and fill up on art and history and big old buildings. Rather than take photos as I usually do (and never really look at again) I decided to record my trip in a little sketchbook. Today I finally got round to scanning the pages of the sketchbook to show you. I thought it might be interesting to share some less polished work and spur of the moment sketches. This is the whole sketchbook (I havent edited anything out...regardless how dodgy the drawings are) and it just shows how erratic my drawing can be, the styles are all over the place! I did also write pages and pages of rambling, nonsensical notes, which you'll be pleased to hear I'm not posting for fear they'll bore you to death.

Spanish artist and illustrator Pep Carrió has been illustrating a daily visual diary since 2007. Since then, Carrió has covered hundreds of pages of moleskin sketchbooks with his stream-of-consciousness and daily thoughts, which have garnered a massive library of work that showcases an interesting insight into Carriós’ interests and train of thought. Something that originally began as a simple challenge: to draw something every day, turned into a personal creative goal to fill a single moleskin datebook with a new […]

In 2007, Madrid-based artist and illustrator Pep Carrió’s expansive diary project began as a challenge with a simple premise: to draw something every day. No matter what materials were at hand and without any predetermined theme or subject matter, he took a game-like approach to see if he could accomplish filling an entire Moleskine datebook throughout the year. The numerous editions that have followed feature a dazzling array of scenes fashioned from marker, pencil, tempera, pen, ink, collage, and found materials. More

Amongst my most precious possessions are my sketchbooks. I use all sorts of shapes and sizes with different types and different colours of paper. Some are pocket books for quick notes and scribbley sketches, others larger for more finished studies and explorations. These are just a few pages showing the kind of thing they contain. palette experiments and colours combinations in watercolour and acrylic ©2017LisaLeQuelenec Sketchbook pages are good for trying out different palettes and combinations of colours. Many of the colours that I choose for paintings come from physical objects, sometimes picked up on site. I take them back to the studio and play with colour mixing replicating them and recreating aspects of the experience of the location. Tonal sketches in watercolour ©2017LisaLeQuelenec Gouache on buff coloured paper and watercolour colour notes on cartridge Charcoal and chalk on white cartridge Watercolour and pencil experiments on cartridge paper pen and watercolour exploration Some things will probably never make it from sketchbook to painting. They are doodles/ experiments and ideas. I sometimes like to play with pattern making, taking lines or colours for a walk. This kind of play can be great for sparking ideas about other work. Although none of my work (to date) resembles any of these patterns I have repeatedly used this palette of colours. Observational studies are a very important part of my practise and are another way that I can explore different subjects, challenge and stretch myself.

It is a beautiful thing - a visual diary. Someone's record of their day, infused with meaning that often only they understand. I began my first in 1998 through a project coordinated by Adele Outerridge from The Studio in Brisbane which she shares with Wim de Vos. There were eight of us, Australia wide, this first year. Artists who committed to doing a drawing a day - not a work of art, but a visual record of what we did that day, what we felt or saw. Maybe a suggestion of what we had been working on in our studios that day - a smear of paint, a torn up etching, an embossing ... one of my drawings was done with chocolate and wine after a lovely dinner party which left me with no desire to draw! 1998 dAd book - susan bowers 1998 dAd book and 2006 dAd bound in 12 monthly books complex coptic binding using tabs first foray into mark making I love using transparent overlays rusting pages helped with drawing into them my first embossing transparent paper and ink dabbling with monoprints sketchings The dAd Project is now world wide and hundreds are involved. Adele still coordinates and she and Wim have continued to draw each day. My discipline has been sadly lacking - it sounds so easy but it is quite a difficult thing to maintain. In the first year we all found it very difficult initially, then addictive and absorbing. I have begun and stopped almost every year since 1998, some years only one or two pages have been done. I do not mind - those pages that were done are a lovely reminder of what I did, or what I thought about that day. This year I began again, stopped some time in February and decided that this blog would take place of the drawing a day. The blogging experience is turning out to be like my daily drawing - difficult, now a little addictive and hopefully soon, absorbing. Not so much so that I do not move forward with my art practice, but as an addition to it in maintaining a certain discipline, and using it as a record of my creative processes.

Welcome to Lolleyland. Where creatures of all kinds live in magical forests, and humans and animals are intertwined with nature. Owls, trees, flowers and ghosts all come together in stories which are portrayed in beautiful, softly coloured illustrations. They are the works of Kathleen Lolley. An artist who grew up between the hills of Kentucky […]

I love the beautiful creations at Be... Dream... Play... This creation inspired me to make my own little bundle book. I bundled some pages and sticks, a tea bag decorated cover and a strip of sewn fabric to create this little book. The pages were decorated with splashes of walnut ink, bits of ink and pieces of decorated paper. The tea bag cover is actually two tea bags glued together for strength, with layers of paint, ink and stampings, a photo I took a few years ago, and finished off with a layer of wax. A whole bundle of inspiration wrapped together. (thanks eb)
Sometimes, it’s the simple stories that stay with us the longest. Like that of Itsuo Kobayashi, a former Japanese soba chef born in 1962 who has recorded his meals in painstakingly detailed, hand-drawn food diaries of sorts for the past 32 years. In addition to recollections about taste, Kobayashi’s pen has accounted for every last…
