Behavior is a constant struggle among many teachers. The stress of trying to teach the curricullum constantly gets interrupted by student behaviors. When we reach out for help there is a lot of documentation needed in order to receive the proper intervention. I am sure you have heard many different times if you are currently dealing with a student that is having behavior difficulties that you need data to support the behaviors you are seeing in the classroom. For example, if you have a student that is throwing chairs or constantly running from the classroom, you would need data that shows how many times a day, what is happening before, during, and after the behaviors. All of this documentation is needed to help come up with a plan to help reduce and eliminate the behaviors. Data needs to be collected each time the behavior occurs so the team that is helping you can look at the frequency, intensity, and determine what is the cause for the behavior. This is imperative in order to come up with an effective behavior intervention plan for a student. Many teachers will say they do not have time to document every single occurrence or incident. Documentation can be time consuming, but if an effective and quick system is in place it can become quick and stress-free. Below are some quick and easy to use forms to quickly and effectively document and track student behaviors. Click the behavior binder link below to purchase this product. Behavior Binder Behavior Binder These forms I keep in my behavior binder and I have a tab for each student that I am tracking data on. I can quickly tally or check off the boxes on the ABC data forms and I am done. I will prefill the date for each day at the beginning of the day and write in any specific information before hand. Behavior Binder Behavior Binder Another way I use these forms in putting them on a clip board with a confidential cover sheet (included in product). That way it is very portable and easy to grab. I put it in an area that is easy to access throughout the school day. All in all you need to find a system that works best for you when tracking behavior data. In my behavior binder you will find many different forms, behavior resources, observations notes and much more. Please reach out to me and leave a comment if you have questions!

I think we can all agree that if you are a teacher, you will occasionally come home stressed out, right? There are a variety of reasons for the stress. If the reason is due to a student with behavior problems I have a tip for you. You know the Oprah shows with Dr. Phil when he is talking to a guest and he says "how's that working for you?" When I find myself stressed out about a student and his/her behavior which is affecting the delivery of my instruction and the chemistry of my class, I ask myself "how's that working for me?" I write down the strategies that I have been using. Then I look at why those strategies don't work with this student. The next thing that I do is take careful documentation. I need to know what day and time of day the behavior is worse. Once I can see a pattern I can investigate to see why some days or times are better than others. Is Thursday morning a bad day? Maybe the student had an extracurricular activity the night before that caused the him/her to go to bed later than normal. Tired and cranky students are not at their best in the classroom. The behavior form below is a quick and easy form to use. Choose two target behaviors such as keep hands to himself/herself when lining up and blurts out during circle time lessons. Put a tally mark to document the number of reminders you give the student to keep hands to him/herself or about blurting. Click HERE to download this freebie. Looking for more tips? This document describes the components of Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan. This product includes: A visual of the FBA process which includes why students engage in problematic behavior, how to identify the target behavior, information collected as part of the FBA (time, setting, antecedent, behavior, consequence), types of data collected, common antecedents, and common functions. Defining Consequences that Maintain Problem Behavior - A flowchart of how to determine the function of a behavior. This is taken directly from an amazing resource that is my go-to reference (O'Neill, Albin, Storey, Horner, & Sprague, 2015). Two Visuals of the Behavior Pathway Model. The first visual includes what information is examined as part of the FBA and the second visual contains how to match the BIP to the FBA. Examples of Matching Teaching Interventions with Replacement Behaviors that Serve the Same Function - Another visual that I LOVE which is taken directly from an amazing resource that is my go-to reference (O'Neill, Albin, Storey, Horner, & Sprague, 2015). How do I use this? I reference these visuals when I am discussing behavior intervention plans or functional behavior assessments with parents. My philosophy is to have parents as educated on the special education processes as possible so that they can be active participants. I also reference these when working with the team as we are going through the FBA/BIP process. It helps us double check that we are being thorough! If you enjoyed this product, please leave a review! My Favorite FBA Resource: O’Neill, R. E., Albin, R. W., Storey, K., Horner, R. H., & Sprague, J. R. (2015). Functional assessment for problem behavior: A practical handbook. (3rd ed.). Have you ever had a puzzle kid? You know, the student that you know something isn't quite right but you don't know what it is? You have a whole bag of tricks for students that are diagnosed with X, Y, or Z, but how do you help your puzzle kids? I see the puzzle kids as a challenge, a challenge that I love. It's helpful to write down all of the issues and the strategies used. Documenting what didn't work is just as important as documenting what does help. It is stressful when my bag of tricks runs low and my teacher friends are out of ideas, too. For those times, I found the perfect resource, The Pre-Referral Intervention Manual, or PRIM for short. The book has any and every type of issue known to teachers. You name it, this book has it. This book gives helpful, practical suggestions that teachers can use with his/her puzzle students. If your school doesn't have a copy of this book, I highly recommend you ask your principal to purchase it for your school. Here are a couple of free printables that can you use to document behavior issues. Do you feel like your classroom is in an episode of Welcome Back, Kotter?
