Artists that produce photorealistic sculptures , for the most part, aim to show us our bodies and life as it really is. Photorealistic sculptors create truly amazing sculptures that will make you feel wonder, revulsion and the sense of looking in someone else's mirror. In this post we feature sculptors Ron Mueck, Evan Penny, Jamie Salmon, Duane Hanson, Sam Jinks and Adam Beane who produce sculpture that seems alive in every detail, right down to veins and rashes on skin. Ron Mueck Ron Mueck is one of the premier names in the photorealistic sculpture field. After that he opened up a studio to produce visual effects for the advertising industry, which he was successful at for some time. Jamie Salmon Vancouver sculptor Jamie Salmon uses human hair to help accentuate his photorealistic sculptures.

This is my latest tutorial, "How to Sculpt a Moveable Bust"! The photos shown are from two of my dolls which have been previously sold. A "moveable bust" can be finished just as a bust or as a complete doll! This tutorial will be a first in the series, as I continue on with the next tutorial will cover parts to make a finished "Cabinet Doll" with clay arms, hands, legs and feet and a cloth body. Many artists make and sell doll busts, and they have really become quite popular. Why not make one a little better than the rest? Make one that moves with a ball and socket joint between the head and breast-plate. It gives the collector options for posing thier bust. I cover all aspects of sculpting a beautiful head, and then making a breast-plate to pose the head in. If you choose you can hold on to the head and breast plate and continue on to make a finished doll (to be shown in future tutorials) or mount the head and breast plate for a "moveable bust"! 37 pages with many full color photos and sculpting aides. PDF format, this is a large file and is not available fully as a download. The first five files but as it is very large file there are several more needed to complete the full class. After payment is received I will send you my drop box link to download the rest of the files. Feel free to contact me if you haven’t received them in 24 hours after purchase. This would make a wonderful gift to your favorite dollmaker or for yourself!

The next step was to flesh out the armatures with upholstery foam. Before I did this I wrapped the armature in plumbers teflon tape like this... I didn't stop to take pictures of this but its basically just a case of completely covering the armature so the foam can't clog the ball and socket joints. This tape is extremely flexible and shouldn't restrict any movements in the joints. When the armatures were completely covered in the tape I could go ahead and flesh it out with upholstery foam. I got two sheets of foam about 20mm thick, sprayed one side of each with Adhesive Spray ( I use 3M's PhotoMount, its alot stronger than SprayMount) then lay my armature in between the sheets and stuck the sheets together. It was like an armature sandwich with foamy bread and armature filling! :-) Then it was just a case of trimming the foam to the shape I wanted using a small nail clipping scissors. Here is a picture with the female character roughly trimmed to size. I went through the exact same process with the other armature. To finish off the shaping i wrapped them with thin foam sports wrap, this is the kind of stuff you might put under an adhesive bandage to stop it sticking to skin. A layer af this stuff, again held on with spray adhesive, really smooths off the roughly cut foam. So thats the bodies shaped, next step will more than likely be moving onto the hands. Thanks for reading, Paul

It was the hottest summer on the record, they say. My memory of the summer was working hard. Once the show was over, so was summer. I feel slight regret and sadness, but luckily autumn has started nicely with warmth, bright sunshine and cool nights. Art in Clay was like a long party without stiff drinks or much sleep, neither. Lots of old customers I have known came. How wonderful! Mike and I both agreed it was the most enjoyable show that we have done. We have also met new awesome customers! What a joy! Thank you so much! Here are the works which went to new homes. Amazonica - butterfly paradise - sold Lamb - sold Lady in ancient Japan - sold Koala - sold The Rock Age - sold Bird nest - sold Imara the baby giraffe and her friends. Rabbits are available. My first sloths, 2 toed and 3 toed, Panda, and white cat went to loving homes. Polar bear, fox, quizzical dog, sleep owl and the sloth now live in their new homes. Owls are popular. The little chick had to stay in the tent overnight alone! Setting up day It was great to be able to meet so many people! Thank you so much! You made the show successful. I'm aware that I haven't written about CAL, and all other things yet. It has been hectic and too hot to use my office during summer. I will catch up, soon.
