Poetry. "Matvei Yankelevich is a fabulist. In his excellent new book he is singing 'a world in a flash of contours.' The voice is dynamic, and performs in a syncretic register: lyric, narrative, citation, essay, and vaudeville are all present and doing important work to expose us to 'the animation of f-stops.' SOME WORLDS FOR DR. VOGT is a spirited investigation by a truly original and fantastic poet."—Peter Gizzi "In this suite of forty-five poems and occasional epigraphic interpolations, Matvei Yankelevich posits worlds, each an instant of place in motion. Time, site, transience: these are the indelibles of world life. And, as such, under Yankelevich's observant eye and working hand and co-passionate mind, these world instants are closely observed and vastly imagined. For Yankelevich, worlds are intimate challenges. His poems reciprocate. They are inviting—and 'you' to whom the invitation is proffered (o world, o reader, o stranger, o history and now and lock of hair and bee) will find yourself welcomed into conditions that are unnerving and familiar and exquisite."—Lyn Hejinian 9780986005077 098600507X 45 BOOK American poetry NOT_MATURE http://books.google.com/books/content?id=0XU6jgEACAAJ&printsec=frontcover&img=1&zoom=5&source=gbs_api en | Author: Matvei Yankelevich | Publisher: Black Square Editions | Publication Date: Oct 01, 2015 | Number of Pages: 80 pages | Language: English | Binding: Paperback | ISBN-10: 098600507X | ISBN-13: 9780986005077

Speakers: Dr. Steven Zucker and Dr. Beth Harris Monet’s painting, The Gare Saint-Lazare, overwhelms the viewer not though its scale (a modest 29 ½ by 41 inches), but through the deep sea of steam and smoke that envelops the canvas. Indeed, as one contemporary reviewer remarked somewhat sarcastically, “Unfortunately thick smoke escaping from the canvas prevented our …

A closely observed, droll, coming-of-age story . . . An absolute keeper. --Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air "A page-turning narrative with laugh-out-loud scenes, and ultimately a hopeful, affirming book about how words can stir the mystery in us." --Julia Alvarez, author of Afterlife A warm and witty story of a young woman who gets swept up in the rivalries and love affairs of a dramatic group of writers. Carla is stuck. In her twenties and working for a landscaper, she's been told she's on the wrong path by everyone--from her mom, who wants her to work at the hospital, to her boyfriend, who is dropping not-so-subtle hints that she should be doing something that matters. Then she is hired for a job at the home of Viridian, a lauded and lovely aging poet who introduces Carla to an eccentric circle of writers. At first she is perplexed by their predilection for reciting lines in conversation, the stories of their many liaisons, their endless wine-soaked nights. Soon, though, she becomes enamored with this entire world: with Viridian, whose reputation has been defined by her infamous affair with a male poet, Mathias; with Viridian's circle; and especially with the power of words, the "ache and hunger that can both be awakened and soothed by a poem," a hunger that Carla feels sharply. When a fight emerges over a vital cache of poems that Mathias wrote about Viridian, Carla gets drawn in. But how much will she sacrifice for a group that may or may not see her as one of their own? A delightfully funny look at the art world--sometimes petty, sometimes transactional, sometimes transformative-- The Poet's House is also a refreshingly candid story of finding one's way, with words as our lantern in the dark. | Author: Jean Thompson | Publisher: Algonquin Books | Publication Date: Jul 03, 2023 | Number of Pages: 336 pages | Language: English | Binding: Paperback | ISBN-10: 1643753924 | ISBN-13: 9781643753928

An original 1930s graphite drawing, Vera Furneaux-Harris RMS, Children on the Sofa. An enchanting 1930s pencil illustration by miniaturist and illustrator Vera Furneaux-Harris RMS. This drawing is likely a study for a children's book illustration. On fairly thin Reeves & Sons Ltd sketchbook paper. This drawing is one of a collection of works by Vera Furneaux-Harris RMS that we have for sale, which showcase the artist's talent for depicting young children. Her closely observed drawings capture, with great tenderness, the universal expressions and physiques of preschool age children absorbed in everyday activities. There is great charm in the what is now vintage 1930s clothing and bobbed hairstyles. But perhaps an even greater appeal lies in the evident timelessness of childhood behaviours that these drawings represent. Vera Furneaux-Harris RMS (b.1904) was a miniaturist, portrait painter and illustrator. She was born in Ross in Hertfordshire and studied at Maidstone School of Art, at the Slade and in Paris. She exhibited at the Royal Academy and also at the Royal Society of Miniature Painters (RMS), of which she was a member. Some buckling to the paper as shown. The picture may have other minor imperfections such as slight marks, toning, foxing, creasing or pinholes, commensurate with age. Please see photos for detail.
