Kefir, a traditional Russian fermented milk drink, adds tenderness to the dough for these flakey Moldovan flatbreads, stuffed with dill, scallions, and sorrel—the perfect starter for a large picnic or as an afternoon snack. If you don’t have access to kefir, simply substitute 3/4 cup natural plain yogurt mixed with 1/4 cup water. This recipe comes from Ukraine-born chef Olia Hercules, author of “MAMUSHKA MAMYIIIKA: Recipes from Ukraine & Beyond” (Mitchell-Beazley, 2015).

When we were young it was cute when we threw tantrums. People would coo at us, maybe even pick us up and hold us, telling us in ooey-gooey tones that 'you'll get it later' or 'you've got to wait a little while.' Then our tears would be mopped up, our snotty little noses would be wiped, and we'd be placed gently to the ground again. As we grew older, some of us would learn to wait our turn, be patient and show consideration for others. Some of us, however, didn't. We'd continue throwing tantrums but in more mature and sophisticated ways.

With winter out of the way, one vegetable I’ve been seeing in abundance at Bay Area farmers markets is the sputnik-like vegetable with the funny name, kohlrabi. Eaten raw, it’s fresh, crisp, and the ideal ingredient for a summer slaw. This kohlrabi slaw is actually one of my favorite summer recipes. Quick and easy to make, it’s a nice cool side dish to eat after a long, warm day of working in the garden, or at a sunny picnic under flowering fruit trees.
