Otto Dix, Gera-Untermhaus 1891 - Singen am Hohentwiel 1969 Der Streichholzhändler II - The matchbox vendor II. (1927) In »Streichholzhändler II« tritt uns ein ärmlich gekleideter Junge entgegen und bietet uns seine Ware zum Kauf. Er sieht uns direkt an, als wären wir Passanten einer Großstadt. Jedes Detail seiner verhärmten Gestalt deutet auf die Armut, die ihn dazu zwingt, Streichhölzer zu verkaufen. Otto Dix wirft in diesem Gemälde einen schonungslosen Blick auf die Schattenseite des Großstadtlebens der »Goldenen Zwanzigerjahre«. Indem er den Jungen formatfüllend darstellt und die Ärmlichkeit seiner Erscheinung betont, statt sie zu beschönigen, fordert er Mitleid ein und klagt gleichzeitig an. Dix zeichnet auch in anderen Arbeiten aus dieser Zeit ein schonungsloses Gesellschaftsbild. Die Welt von Jazz, Tanz und Vergnügen trifft etwa in seinem »Großstadttriptychon« (1927/28) unvermittelt auf entstellte Kriegsversehrte des Ersten Weltkriegs, Prostitution und Gewalt. Mal schildert er kühl die Nachkriegswirklichkeit der Weimarer Republik, mal überzeichnet er sie grotesk. Früh wurde er deshalb als einer der wichtigsten Künstler der Neuen Sachlichkeit erkannt. Mit seiner altmeisterlichen Maltechnik und realistischen Darstellungsweise entlarvt er schonungslos die Zustände und Konflikte seiner Zeit. Quelle: Kunsthalle Mannheim

Along with George Grosz and Max Beckmann, he is widely considered one of the most important artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit.[2]
