Este año, el Día Nacional de la Nutrición tiene como lema Comer bien para envejecer mejor. Nuestros mayores han ido experimentando cambios en sus vidas que les han llevado a realizar también cambios en su alimentación. En general, los ancianos españoles todavía siguen una alimentación de tipo mediterránea, sin embargo, sus hijos y sus nietos, se están alejando cada vez más de esta pauta saludable. La esperanza de vida en España, la mayor de toda Europa La humanidad ha buscado, desde tiempos remotos, aumentar la esperanza de vida, los años vividos por los individuos. La esperanza de vida media alude al tiempo que, en circunstancias normales, va a lograr vivir el 50% de la población en un determinado lugar, edad y época. Esta no debe confundirse con la longevidad máxima que sería el mayor tiempo vivido por un ser humano. En la actualidad se sitúa en los 122 años. Pues bien, esta esperanza de vida media se ha ido incrementando en nuestro país a lo largo de los años. España es el país con mayor expectativa de vida de toda Europa. La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) fija la esperanza de vida española en 82,2 años. Se estima que en 2050, España será el segundo país más envejecido del mundo, por detrás de Japón. Sin embargo, la OMS también advierte que esta posición privilegiada podría cambiar. ¿Cómo? Si descuidamos determinados factores que ejercen una gran influencia en nuestra salud. La evidencia científica ha demostrado que un estilo de vida saludable se asocia a una mayor longevidad, pero en la actualidad estamos descuidando numerosos aspectos que conducen a nuestro estilo de vida por el camino saludable. Entre ellos, la alimentación. La gran influencia de la dieta sobre la longevidad La dieta ejerce un papel fundamental en el envejecimiento. La aparición de diversas enfermedades en personas mayores (neoplasias, alteraciones cardiovasculares, patologías ligadas a la obesidad...) subyacen en alteraciones dietéticas que, en muchas ocasiones, se iniciaron en edades tempranas. La influencia que ejerce la dieta sobre el envejecimiento se puede observar ya incluso antes de nacer.¡Como lo oyen! El estilo de vida de la madre durante la gestación condiciona al feto y, por tanto, a otras etapas del ciclo vital. Por ejemplo: si la dieta de la madre es pobre en calcio, se afectará el desarrollo del esqueleto óseo del feto y podrá provocar un crecimiento inicial deficiente y la aparición de osteoporosis en la edad adulta. Como ya os había mostrado en esta entrada, los fetos sometidos a malnutrición intrauterina desarrollan una predisposición para utilizar de manera más eficiente los escasos recursos que les llegan. Estos niños suelen nacer con bajo peso y, cuando son sometidos a un ambiente en el que hay abundancia de alimentos, ganan peso con facilidad. La obesidad, las enfermedades cardiovasculares, la diabetes mellitus de tipo II y la hipercolesterolemia, son patologías que pueden tener un origen prenatal y que van a condicionar la salud y, por tanto, la longevidad. Numerosos estudios científicos han señalado el impacto beneficioso que la Dieta Mediterranea tiene sobre la longevidad. El Estudio Prospectivo Europeo sobre Cáncer y Nutrición (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition, EPIC) valoro la relación entre los hábitos alimentarios y el desarrollo de tumores en 10 países, entre ellos, España. Se siguieron 521. 457 adultos sanos con edades comprendidas entre los 35 y los 70 años de diez paises europeos durante 10 años. Se vio que, cuanto más se ajustaban los hábitos alimentarios de las personas a la Dieta Mediterránea menos posibilidades había de fallecer, independientemente del sexo, la actividad física y el consumo de tabaco. Los autores del estudio concluyeron que "La adherencia a la dieta mediterránea, basada en frutas, verduras, grasas insaturadas está asociada con una esperanza de vida significativamente mayor". Fruta y camino diario para ser un centenario La Federación Española de Sociedades de Nutrición, Alimentación y Dietética ha elaborado un tríptico con motivo del Día Nacional de la Nutrición 2013 en el que nos dan algunos consejos para aplicar diariamente con el fin de llevar a la práctica lo que la evidencia científica apoya como el mejor camino para aumentar la longevidad. Consumir al menos 5 raciones de frutas y verduras al día. Lo ideal sería consumir dos raciones de verduras y hortalizas (un plato de ensalada variada, un plato de verdura cocida, un tomate grande, dos zanahorias...) y tres raciones de fruta ( 120-200 gramos de fruta, lo que viene siendo una pieza mediana de fruta, un bol de cerezas o de fresas o dos rodajas de melón). Introducir de dos a tres raciones semanales de legumbres. Una ración de legumbres son unos 60-80 gramos de legumbres en crudo, es decir, un plato normal. Incorporar, al menos, tres veces por semana, un puñado de frutos secos, es decir, unos 20 o 30 gramos. Sustituir los lácteos enteros por semidesnatados o desnatados. Realizar tres comidas principales diarias (desayuno, comida y cena) y una o dos colaciones, una a media mañana y otra a media tarde. Llevar una vida activa (subir escaleras, ir andando a los sitios, realizar las tareas de casa..) y dedicar al menos 30 minutos al día a la actividad física. Se entiende por actividad física moderada la que acelera de forma perceptible el ritmo cardiaco y requiere un esfuerzo moderado (caminar a paso rápido, bailar, participación activa en juegos y deportes con niños ...). La actividad física intensa requiere una gran cantidad de esfuerzo, provoca una respiración rápida y un aumento sustancial de la frecuencia cardiaca ( salir a correr, hacer aerobic, desplazarse rápidamente en bicicleta, natación rápida...) Beber agua a diario, entre 1,5 y 2 litros al día. Para concluir, quiero animaros a que intentéis introducir pequeñas modificaciones en vuestra dieta, basándola en alimentos de origen vegetal (verduras, frutas, hortalizas, cereales integrales, legumbres, frutos secos..) y reduciendo el consumo de alimentos de alimentos ricos en grasas saturadas y grasas trans (margarina, mantequilla, bollería, dulces, pasteles, helados, carnes grasas, embutidos) y ricos en azúcares sencillos como las bebidas azúcaradas (refrescos, zumos industriales..). Así mismo, me gustaría incitaros a que aumentéis vuestra actividad física, abandonéis el hábito tabáquico, durmáis al menos ocho horas y llevéis una vida activa con el fin de aumentar vuestra esperanza de vida. 1.
