Handcrafted from textural papier maché, the Curio Paper Mache Bowl has a unique aged appearance achieved by adding a clear lacquer to the raw papier maché. We love how it makes this piece appear as though it’s from a distant time. Made from recycled newspaper, they are entirely natural and sustainable. First the newspaper is mixed with water, then chalk and tree sap crystals are added to turn the substance into a clay-like material. The pulp is kneaded into chapati-like forms, then rolled and moulded into the sculptural objects we love. There is no firing, no power used, and the process is entirely eco-friendly. Porous in nature, papier maché should not be exposed to liquids. Not food safe. A lifelong lover of beautiful things, Irene Held started Indaba in 1990. Indaba is a Zulu word that means "a gathering of people". By implication it means connection and we are excited to connect with you through our story, our products, and the people who make them.
Hanging from the ceiling like candy-colored droplets, the paper-pulp mobiles by Yuko Nishikawa turn a stark gallery into a whimsical dreamscape. The Brooklyn-based artist fashions wide, sloping vessels and punctured rings from recycled packages, old diaries, sketches, and other waste materials, forming individual pods that attach to sprawling metal armature. Ephemeral in material and design, each piece is created with the intention that it will be unassembled and reverted back to its muddled form for resculpting. More

Yesterday I spent much of my day working on bowl making. I started them many months ago, and they have waited patiently for my return. I managed to finish 2, and prepped four more. These bowls are made from egg carton pulp that is covered with layers of tea bag paper and paint before being decorated. The final coat is a layer of encaustic wax. I have a plan for this one..... but this one will just happen as I go along. I was planning to work on these today, but the day was sunny..... and the mountains called me. Maybe I will work on them tomorrow.....
