Ok I LOVE summer with my girls. These moments are magical! Today I asked June what she wanted to make and without hesitation in her three year old imagination she quickly responded…”Fish mommy…I want to make fish please” So we google imaged “tropical coral reef” She loved looking at all the fish and talking about all the different colors and designs. She drew some fish and I held her little hand and helped draw some more. She had a list of everything she wanted: blowfish, star fish, catfish, flounder, speckled trout, shark, jelly fish, and SquidWard (my husband is a fisherman and she is obsessed with fish) I cut them out and we counted them and sorted them a few times. Then time to paint!! “Look at the water change colors mommy” I told her to paint yellow on her blue starfish and see what color it made “Wow GREEN!!” We used all different things to paint a variety of lines, dots, and designs; Forks chopsticks Q-tips and Fingers of course! The highlight of my day was when my almost three yr old turned to me and said, “This makes me happy, mommy” She finally added some buttons and sequins with Elmer’s glue I used my hot glue gun to glue the pieces together. June picked out some shells for the bottom and we were thrilled with the finished coral reef!!
This pasta sculpture activity is a wonderful building and tinkering activity that lets kids use their creativity and imagination.
Sometimes just painting with regular paint on regular flat paper is boring. Sometimes you want to create something different, something cool, something EPIC! That's what my kids told me the other day. Boring old painting

Fun with Photoshop… It hasn’t rained here all summer in Houston Texas, so we made a photo to show our faith that it is going to RAIN soon!! Step one…take photo painting sky Step two- convert to black and white, and adjust contrast, light levels, and sharpen Step three- Paint sky and photograph 4. Now go back to your black and white image, click layer/duplicate layer/okay 5. go to the sky painting image and click select/all ……. then click edit/copy 6. now return to the blk and wht photo of your artist and click edit paste….this will paste the painted sky onto your black and white photo. 7.Use the move tool to stretch it and move it to where you want it. 8. Adjust the opacity to taste, to make it see through enough to know where you want to erase 9. then just use the eraser tool to erase around your artist and any other part you don’t want the painting to show, flatten image, and VOILA!! Email me your creative results or questions and I will post everyone’s photos on my next blog!! [email protected]

Perhaps if you follow this blog, or have come here via Pinterest like some 680,000 of you (seriously, there were 15,000+ visits last month?!), you have noticed that I have not posted in over a year and wondered what's up?? I mentioned in an earlier post that maintaining our school blogs became less encouraged at one point, so I sort of slowed down and was mostly posting within our school's class pages for parents to see. Then, during the last school year, my family made the decision to move to a new state, and I suppose I just started to focus on wrapping up nine glorious years at Calvert School and I stopped blogging altogether. Last June, I moved south and this year I have been staying home part time with my son and actually making some art of my own (I paint pet portraits! See below :)). I miss teaching so very much, and I still visit this blog every month or two to approve/publish comments and reply to them. I am happy and humbled that so many people are inspired by my lessons and my students' work, and it is so cool to still feel connected in some way to the Art Education world through comments and questions from other teachers! I hope to one day find a new school home and continue to do what I know I do best- teach ART! - and then you might see me pick up here again too! Crayola Model Magic Owls 1st Grade students loved having a "Clay Day" and creating owls. We discussed the following owl facts: A baby owl is called an owlet. A group of owls is called a parliament. There are over 200 different types of owls. Owls can swivel their heads to look backwards. Owls hunt for their food. Owls are nocturnal. The owls pictured are from Ms. Rocco's first grade class. The students did a wonderful job painting the owls. The above owls were created by students in Ms. Sangataldo's class. The students painted a piece of wood black with watercolor paints. This created the night sky. Each student was given a pack of clay. First, they made a ball with the clay and flattened it. This created a flat circle shape. Next, they peeled in the edges on each side of the circle to create wings. Then the top of the circle was peeled down to create the head. Finally, we pinched the ears and added details such as eyes, a beak, and claws. During the following art class the owls were painted with tempera paint. Lastly, the owls and branch were glued to the wooden sky. The above owls are from Ms. George-Moskovitz's class.
