By the way, the food issue of The New Yorker just came out and had a long article on Baumkuchen, aka "Spit Cake." The "spit" in the cake is a large metal stake that is dipped in batter and then rotated near a flame. This process is repeated dozens of times and then the cake is removed from the stake and slices into disks. Each slice has "rings" like a tree from the multiple layers of batter getting baked. In Poland they call this sękacz (or senkacz). I think I ate sękacz every single day we were in Warszawa. You can find it here too, but it is not cheap. But I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Lazy Napoleon Cake Recipe adapted from Sauleta Virtuve Ingredients 500 g puff pastry 1 can (397 g) sweet condensed milk 200 g good quality butter (82 %) 1 tsp vanilla extract Instructions 1. Cut the puff pastry into 1 cm wide strips (about 20 cm length). Put the strips on the lined with baking paper baking sheet and bake for 10-20 minutes in 200ºC oven. 2. Cool the strips and set several strips aside for decorating. 3. For the cream, whisk butter, condensed milk and vanilla together until well combined. Butter and condensed milk should be room temperature. 4. Take a big sheet of cling film and cover your work surface. Spread several tablespoons of cream, put 6 pastry strips and pour some cream on top. Do this twice or three times. Last layer should be cream. I made three layers. 5. Roll everything in a tight roll. 6. Chill the cake in the fridge at least overnight, best for 2-3 days. 7. Crumb the remaining strips. Roll out the cake from the cling film and decorate with the crumbs. Patirtis. Kiekviena juostelių partija man daugmaž kepė apie 15 minučių. Nors man jis skanus ir toks. Tinginių 'Napoleonas' Receptas adaptuotas iš Sauleta Virtuvė Ingredientai 500 g sluoksniuotos bemielės tešlos 1 indelis (397 g) saldaus kondensuoto pieno 200 g sviesto (82 % riebumo) 1 šaukštelis vanilės ekstrakto Gaminimo eiga 1. Tešlą supjaustykite 1 cm pločio (maždaug 20 cm ilgio) juostelėmis. Dėkite ant kepimo popieriumi išklotos kepimo formos ir kepkite apie 10-20 minučių 200ºC įkaitintoje orkaitėje. 2. Iškepusias juosteles atvėsinkite, kelias pasilikite papuošimui. 3. Įdarui sviestą, vanilę ir kondensuotą pieną gerai išplakite. Produktai turėtų būti kambario temperatūros. 4. Ant stalo tieskite didelį maistinės plėvelės lakštą. Paskleiskite kelis šaukštus kremo ir dėkite pirmą juostelių sluoksnių. Aš dėjau 6 juosteles. Tuomet užpilkite kremo. Vėl dėkite juosteles, kitas sluoksnis kremo, vėl juostelės ir galiausiai ant viršaus kremo. Aš dariau tris juostelių sluoksnius. 5. Sandariai viską susukite į maistinę plėvelę. Kad padarytumėte rulono formą, susukus, lengvai pakočiokite. 6. Dėkite į šaldytuvą mažiausiai nakčiai, o geriausia 2-3 paroms. 7. Išvyniokite iš plėvelės ir papuoškite trupintomis juostelėmis.
