LDS Relief Society Activity - This Little Piggy
This activity was our first one since COVID-19. I was able to do one in February, my first one in this ward. Working carefully with the Relief Society & the Bishopbric we got permission to do a…
THE PURPOSE: To encourage actual research and discovery of family history Ask each woman to go into her personal family history (either on familysearch.org or other) and trace her mother’s line back as far as she can go, following her mother’s mother’s mother’s, mother's... mother etc. Once she’s found the name, come prepared to share something about that woman. We did this in May, it felt appropriate for Mother’s Day month. But really, you could do this any time of the year. IDEAS FOR SHARING: (Keep it under 3 minutes per share.) It can be a photo of what she might have worn, or food she might have eaten, or world events that might have had an impact on her etc. A sister might even discover an interesting story attached to that ancestors name and could briefly share it. TORTILLAS What do pictures of tortillas have to do with anything? I discovered my great grandmother (7 generations back) lived in Norway. After a tiny bit of research I discovered she would have eaten a lot of Norwegian Potato Lefse in the 1800s. So I found a recipe for it, prepared some and brought it to share. Lefse is very similar to tortillas. I was surprised how making these me feel close to my great (times 7 ) grandmother as I cooked, I imagined her doing everything I was doing only many, many years ago. THOUGHTS On why this activity was so well attended: 1. People like to talk about themselves and family. 2. It was a unique challenge and fun spin on what usually seems like a tedious and daunting task (family history work). 3. It’s exciting to discover new things and then to be provided with an opportunity to share those discoveries with other people. 4. I've noticed “participation” activities ALWAYS have better attendance. Please enjoy this activity. This one brought me great pleasure to attend and to help plan. And we got good feedback from the sisters as well.
Speed Friendshipping is a fun way to get to know each other and lots of laughs are guaranteed!
I had to throw together a Relief Society Activity super fast, and this is what we did. It turned out AWESOME!!! I took my ideas from these two blogs; http://pininspired.blogspot.com/2012/05/walk-day-in-my-shoes-rs-activity.html http://www.somewhatplanned.com/2015/09/lds-church-in-her-shoes-relief-society-night/ This was our fun invitation to get the sisters excited! Our stake at that time was gathering donations for Safety Net so we encouraged the sisters to bring a pair of shoes to donate, and any other donations they had. We received a ton of great donations! The dessert for this event was just WAY to fun! We made high heel cupcakes! I am a huge fan of NOFADE cupcake liners. Totally worth the extra cents. You can find these at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Party stores... I decided to make 2 kinds of cupcakes. Chocolate Oreo and Strawberry Lemonade. So easy. Just make the cake like normal, but add a pudding mix! YUM! Oreo Frosting: 1/2 cup shortening 1/2 cup butter Pinch of Salt 5 Tbsp of milk 1 tsp vanilla 5 cups powdered sugar 1/4 cup Karo corn syrup Cream together shortening and butter. Add pinch of salt and vanilla. Gradually add powdered sugar and milk. Blend well. And corn syrup last, beating an additional 3-4 minutes. Then add finely crushed oreos. Add to your taste! Spread or pipe onto cupcakes. Strawberry Lemonade Frosting 1 cup real butter 1/2 cup seedless Strawberry Jam (You can use seeds, totally a preference) 3-4 cups powdered sugar Mix all ingredients together until fluffy. Spread or pipe onto cupcakes. Add lemon zest to the top of cupcakes for the lemon flavor! We put them together at the church on the table they would be displayed on, because they are fragile. You don't want to have to move them a bunch. Simply frost a simple edge around a Milano Cookie . Found at most grocery stores. cut your Pirouette Waffers in half but at a 45 degree angle. Simply frost the cupcake to your liking. Then place the Milano cookie in the back at an angle, then put some frosting on the 45 degree angle of the Pirouette Waffer and stick that to the bottom of the Milano cookie. It really is so simple, and so cute, and everyone LOVED them! The night of the event, we set up two rows of chairs in a semi-circle, had a few fun high heels next to the shoe quotes, and then the fun high heel cupcake display. We gathered together, sang "Faith in Every Footstep" I gave a little tiny talk about not judging others, walking a mile in their shoes, "what if her story, were my story." Then everyone came up and shared their own shoe story. (Those that wanted to. Most people did!) Then we ate fruit, and high heel cupcakes!!! I thought it turned out to be a super fun night. Some of the stories brought the spirit, others just made you laugh. Stories of shoe being worn for temple service, river rafting trips, a husband buying them after noticing a wife admiring them... so many fun stories. A fun fun night! Here are some of the printables I made to use that night;

Despite the storm brewing in the sky that night, we had a GREAT turnout for our May Relief Society meeting! The theme was "Rock, Paper, Scriptures." We focused on ways to come closer to the Savior and "hold to the rod." Carrie opened up the evening with some personal experiences and a wonderful video emphasizing the importance of daily scripture study in our lives. We then split into three classes and got to take part in some great discussions. ROCK Teryl told us about her grandfather and the house he built one rock at a time. It was a three year process but the results were a house with a strong foundation and walls that would stand through the years. Even after the house was vandalized, it still maintained its structure and has been fixed up and still stands today. She tied this in with our own lifelong efforts to build upon the rock of our Redeemer. Helaman 5:12 states: And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall. PAPER Brianne led a great discussion on journaling and how it blesses our lives-- and the lives of our posterity! We talked about different kinds of journals we can keep: scrapbooks online journals (someone suggested we all try out www.ldsjournal.com !) good old fashioned pen and paper journals family journals scripture journals gratitude journals blogs Not only can we benefit from looking back at past journal entries, but our future children and grandchildren may be able to gain something from them as well. If you think about it, the scriptures themselves are record keeping and "journaling" of ancient prophets. So, in a way, our personal journals we keep can be like our own "scripture" we are writing for our future children and grandchildren to learn and grow from. SCRIPTURES (Holding to the rod): Kimberly lassoed us up and took us on a little obstacle course to drive home her point. Her instructions to us were only this: "Hold on to the rope and follow me." So the group was all walking along clumped together in the loop of the rope. We thought getting up the narrow stairway to the stage was difficult... ...but that seemed like nothing when we realized we hand to climb under a small table!!! Kimberly just kept repeating "Just hold on to the rope and follow me." Most groups went through the whole thing trying to stay inside the loop of the rope. This last group made the realization as they were trying to cram under the table that Kimberly never said they had to stay in the loop. They just had to hold onto the rope! They realized that it would be much easier if they untied the loop and just each held onto it in a straight line. This was a great object lesson that brought us closer together as sisters (literally). We discussed the point of this exercise and applied it to our own journeys in life. Sometimes we get too caught up in doing things a certain way or a way we think it should be done or even the way that MOST people do it. But, that isn't always the most effective way. Ultimately, our instruction is to "hold to the rope and follow me"-- or hold to the rod and follow Him. We need to try to get rid of those distractions or unimportant things that sometimes make it so much more difficult than it needs to be! We shared different things we personally do to bring ourselves closer to Christ and our Heavenly Father-- different ways we have found to do things that work well for US personally. Whether it was methods of scripture study or ways to get rid of distractions in life. After these awesome messages we joined back together to close our meeting. Carrie invited each of us to take a rock from the table in the back of the room and write on it something that was a "spiritual rock" in our lives. Either a favorite scripture or quote. We can display these rocks somewhere as a reminder of having that strong foundation in our lives. And... of course we enjoyed some tasty refreshments together! We had fruits and veggies and dips. Our new friend Ann even brought some delicious Pilipino dishes for us to try! A tasty sesame noodle dish and some potstickers. We always have a great time getting together as sisters and visiting together. And tonight was no different.

In patterning our life after the Savior's we should seek for opportunities to serve those around us. In Mosiah 2:17 it states, "...when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God." As Relief Society sisters, we have tremendous opportunity to watch out for those around us that need that loving hand of help. When we feel impressed to help someone we need to listen to those promptings and act upon them. We can provide service to others individually or we can do this as a family. Teaching our children the importance of unselfishness, love, and sacrifice. One thing that we did with our kids a few months back was thirty days of service. Each day we did an act of service for thirty days. It was fun to see them serve others and discuss the happy feelings we each individually felt from doing so. Here are some ideas:

Last month I was looking for a getting to know you game that I could do with a large group of women for Relief Society. After searching for something we could play I came up with my own game. It is called: It is a spin off of the "This or That" game. Here is how it works: We started by having everyone stand on whatever side of the line they wanted. Then I asked everyone to “switch sides if” the statement applied to them. After some of the statements they were asked to tell someone next to them a little more about themselves. I wasn’t sure if the game would go well, but it ended up being a lot of fun and got everyone talking. It was really neat to see who switched sides on some of the statements and who had the same things in common with each other and with you. Here are some of the statements: You like to cook You prefer summer more than winter You have been on a mission… if you switched sides tell someone where You have 4 or more kids You prefer dogs more than cats You were born in (the state you live)…if you didn’t switch sides tell someone where You like to sew You have any grandchildren… if you switched sides tell someone how many You prefer spring more than fall You have ridden a horse You have lived in another state…if you switched sides tell someone where You prefer pie more than cake You have 4 or more siblings You have a pet… if you switched sides tell someone what pet you have and it’s name You prefer morning more than night You were named after someone…if you switched sides tell someone who You like to sing You have participated in a race (like a 5K or marathon) You speak another language…if you switched sides tell someone what languages you speak You prefer mountains more than beach You prefer books more than movies Play an instrument…if you switched sides tell someone what instrument you play You like to play sports or have played on any teams You prefer dark chocolate more than white Chocolate You have traveled out of the country…if you switched sides tell someone where You prefer washing dishes more than doing laundry There are many other things you could add to this list to fit your "getting to know you" group.

Oh February! Our ward used to have a recipe club a few years ago that fizzled out, so we decided for one night we'd have a Throw Back to Recipe Club! We had a sign up and ladies could bring a healthy recipe (but we added it could be heart happy or just plain taste-bud happy so ladies could bring a favorite anything to share). In my ward we always have refreshments first:-) The plan for the activity is as follows: 6:30 Bless Refreshments/Socializing 7pm Start Program. It works out perfectly, since not everyone can make it at 6:30, so the program is at 7pm. When we used to have refreshments at the end, people would have to leave and miss them, so it just made sense to start them off at the beginning. at 7pm we have an opening song to start off the program portion of the night. Pic of the set up the day before the activity. Luckily I saved all these Hearts I cut out of a scrapbook paper pack from last years Feb activity so I put them up again (but we were in the RS room last year). I like doing U shape for the tables so everyone has the feeling of sitting together, rather than the round tables that are separate. Part I: Speaker for 15 minutes We started the program at 7 with an opening song and then Haley gave a great talk (tied into the word of wisdom) about her journey losing over 60lbs in the last year by her dedication to eating healthy. The sisters and I all enjoyed hearing her personal message and true story. She did such a great job tying everything together! Part II: Sharing Time We went around the table and each sister told everyone about the dish she brought or talked about a favorite dish. (so everyone got to share if they wanted to-- fellowshipping by having everyone talking :-)) There were so many delicious dishes, and someone brought some bean brownies lol! Part III: The GAME! We played the Minute to win it game of OREO Forehead or whatever its called. We had 2-3 sisters compete at a time to get an oreo from their forehead to their mouth in one minute without using their hands. We brought 2 pkgs of oreos in case some oreos fell on the ground ladies could keep trying with a clean oreo:-) Phyllis won in about 5 seconds! She was amazing and the only one to do it. There was a lot of laughing and hooting and hollering watching us all attempt the feat! Closing Prayer and Clean up. :-)
