Remedios Varo, Anglès, ES 1908 - Mexico City 1963 Begegnung - Encounter (1959) Remedios Varo was a Spanish painter known for her haunting and iconographic work. A devotee of Hieronymus Bosch, her works often use mystical narratives to convey issues of gender rights and political repression. Born in Anglès, Spain, Varo studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, before fleeing Spain for Paris during the Spanish Civil War. While in Paris, she found friends as well as an audience among the Surrealist community of writers and artists. In 1941, forced to leave France during WWII, Varo settled in Mexico City, where she befriended Leonora Carrington, another exiled painter. Tragically she died at the age of 55 in Mexico City. Today Remedios Varo is considered as one of the most important and influential Surrealist artists of the 20th century.

Remedios Varo (1908-1963) was an Spanish-Mexican surrealist painter. She was born in Anglés Cataluña, Spain in 1908 and died from a heart-attack in Mexico City in 1963. During the Spanish Civil War she fled to Paris where she was largely influenced by the surrealist movement. She met in Barcelona the french surrealist poet Benjamin Péret and became his wife.
