This product includes a total of 240 individual successive blending CVC cards. Successive blending (also known as continuous blending) is a great way for students to begin blending sounds together. This is especially important for students that are having trouble reading CVC words. If you have a student that can produce each individual sound but is unsuccessful reading the entire word, this is the perfect step for them to work on. For example, you might encounter a student who reads like this: /c/ /a/ /t/ but then says the word tag instead of cat. This is a student who would benefit from successive blending because it helps them hold onto all the sounds in order and read the word accurately. Included in this download: 1). Directions on how to use this product (a visual is included with the product, a video demonstration is also included on the preview. Please see my Instagram account @literacystar to watch more videos) 2). 240 successive blending cards that can be used 3 ways! 48 cards per vowel that includes both real and nonsense words. *Flash cards: Print out the specific sets that match the needs of your students and use the set as flash cards. They can also be sent home with students to practice. * Flip cards- Print out the cards with their matching cover, use a hole punch at the top and hold them together with a binder ring. You can create 6 different sets- a, e, i, o, u & nonsense words (mixed vowels * Sorting cards- Use the sorting card headers to make a game. You will need to print out all the real and nonsense cards that match that vowel type. Students will read and sort the cards under the correct sort card. ALL cards feature CVC words *** An important first step is to be able to blend 2 sounds*** Please see my product Successive Blending 2 Sounds as this is the first step in the process. If you find you have a student who has been really struggling with reading, please try focusing on 2 sounds first. The next product is Successive Blending CVC Mats- that product builds upon the 2 sound work and utilizes continuous sounds to make blending easier. This product can be used in conjunction with the CVC mats to build independence and provide multiple ways to practice this skill. There is also successive blending digraphs & blends which follows this CVC product. Another option is the successive reading bundle with all the other 3 products for a discounted price. Do you have students who struggle with carefully blending sounds left to right to decode? Do they say each sound and then make a wild guess? We all have those students. Successive blending is when you start with the first sound and then progressively add in each next sound, until all of the sounds have been blended. This is one way to help kids who struggle with blending. I noticed that I had a need for a product like this to help my students who were struggling with the concept and skill of blending, so I made this for use in small, differentiated groups. Can also be used as whole group practice depending on time of year and student needs. These practice pages can be made into booklets or put into plastic sleeves or even sent home for reading practice homework. I use these in my small groups and also have students use them for a warm up independent practice before reading independent decodable texts during our Workshop/Centers time. What’s included: 24 Successive Blending pages, each aligned with a phonics skill and while it happens to be noted/aligned with UFLI Lessons, these can be used with any phonics program. This resource includes all short vowels in words that are CVC, Blends (CVCC, CCVC, CCCVC, & CCVCC), FLSZ words, and Digraphs (ck, sh, th, ch, wh, ph, -ng, and -nk) I hope this resource works for you! Looking for a hands-on approach to teaching blending Short A CVC words? These clip cards are perfect for practicing tapping to blend, successive blending, and continuous blending! This THREE-IN-ONE resource includes blending cards for 20 Short A CVC words. There are three sets with a different blending option in each set. Students will blend the word and clip the correct picture. Set 1: Tap to Blend - The cards have a dot under each letter. Students will touch each dot while saying the sound. Finally, they will blend the word together by sliding their finger along the arrow. They will clip the correct picture after reading the word. Set 2: Successive Blending - The cards have a swoop under the first and second letters on the second and third succession. This is to encourage students to blend the first two sounds together, then add the final sound, and finally slide their finger along the arrow while reading the word. They will clip the correct picture after reading the word. Set 3 - Continuous Blending - The cards have a swoop between the first and second and second and third letters. Students are encouraged to swoop their finger toward the next sound in a continuous blend. Finally, they will blend the word together by sliding their finger along the arrow. They will clip the correct picture after reading the word. FAQ: How many cards are included? - There are 20 cards in each set. The same 20 words are used, just with different blending strategies. Do these require color ink? - There are color AND black-and-white versions included. Do I have to use clothespins with these? - Nope! I designed them to be used as clip cards, but students could also cover the correct picture with mini erasers or other manipulatives. Do you have more hands-on reading activities? - Yes! I have an ENDLESS bundle available by clicking here. Can I try it before I buy it? - Of course! Download the preview file above for a free sample of each set! Always aligned to your curriculum! Build confidence with blending three, four, or five phoneme words with this continuous blending activity including high frequency words and sentences! Do your beginning readers struggle to blend sounds correctly? Do they know the sounds and say them but are not yet able to read three or four phoneme decodable words accurately? Are they not able to recall the first phoneme after saying the second or third? Students who struggle with working memory or have slower processing speed may struggle when beginning to decode words, even when they know the sounds. Continuous blending or successive blending is an effective strategy that will improve your students' accuracy with sound blending. Generate continuous blending activities and create supplemental materials using decodable words from your curriculum or text! Pre-teach or reenforce words from the text and build confidence with three, four, and five phoneme words - even words with digraphs! Simply enter the phonemes into the bottom row to generate the pyramid! Huge time saver! How I use this resource: Students say each phoneme from top to bottom, adding one phoneme at a time until all phonemes have been voiced and can be blended to read the decodable word. If using the sheets that include writing, students write the word below the pyramid. Go back and decode each word again until they can be read independent of the pyramid. Practice the high-frequency/heart words. Read the words within a sentences. Create pyramids that focus on a specific skill such as beginning blends or digraph "sh." Pre-teach words within a text to reduce cognitive load and increase fluency while the passage is being read.
