Get funky with these fantastic Insect Dies from Tim Holtz & Sizzix- Funky Insects- 665364 This die set is part of Sizzix's 2021 Chapter 2 Release... Each insect has it's own die (and it's parts to layer are on the same die, so there's no guesswork which goes with which). These insects range in sizes from 2 7/8" x 2.25" to 5/8" x 1 1/8". Each set is sold individually & includes 5 dies- To create a bee, a dragonfly, a ladybug, a moth & a beetle... I finally got around to inking up some watercolor cardstock and made a bunch of these bugs- They were surprisingly quick & easy to piece together.

A blog about stamping, card making and mixed media
I am so grateful to have been asked to make some samples with the new Halloween release from Tim Holtz and Stampers Anonymous. There are some great stamps that can be used for so many occasions all year long. Today's card uses several of the new stamp sets that are all linked below if you haven't gotten a chance to order them yet. LOL In my post yesterday I gave a photo tutorial for making these backgrounds. You can find that tutorial here. I used two of those backgrounds in today's card. The main background is the iron-off piece pictured in the bottom of the photo above. It is the smaller pattern from the Tapestry CMS414 The resist is so light that it gives the feel of a watercolor stamp, but you can see a slight blue from the Speckled Egg Distress Embossing Glaze. I love how there are still some slight little details in areas. The background for the beetle from the Specimen CMS410 stamp was the iron-off of the background set below. I die cut the Stacked Labels die from Tim Holtz Sizzix Alterations and then stamped the beetle on the piece with Black Soot Distress Archival Ink. I used the bottom piece. It is the piece with the Ironed-off Walnut Stain Distress Embossing Glaze. You really can't tell that it is the upside down image of one of the Renaissance CMS415 stamp set, but if you look closely you can see some bits of the arch way and some of the carved details. I stamped not only the beetle, but also the sentiment from Tiny Text Halloween on that piece. To make the beetle stand out, I matted the label shape with a piece of Blackout Cardstock. Then I stamped the beetle a second time on some Distress Mixed Media Heavystock and then I colored it with some Distress Inks, I cut out just the body, sprayed it with Distress Resist Spray and then popped it up from the background so that it had some dimension. I also popped the entire label piece up from the Blackout Cardstock for even more dimension. and machine stitched around the outside edge with a Sewing Machine before adhering it to a black card back. This card went together really quickly because I already had the backgrounds made. I highly recommend working on a bunch of backgrounds at once so that when you are ready to make cards, you can put them together quickly without getting out a bunch of products. Tami I am an affiliate with Simon Says Stamp and Scrapbook.com so the links below send you to one of those stores depending on which logo you choose. If you wish to purchase something from either store and use one of my links below, I get a small percentage of your order, at no additional cost to you. This helps me to defray the costs of this blog, the time, the ideas and tutorials I post here. Your help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hello! Here today with a card that I created for our monthly stamping group...the theme was a "hilarious card." Well, I do not have any funny (punny) stamp sets, so this was a wee bit out of my comfort zone. Here is the result... This is the first time that I was able to play with Tim Holtz/Sizzix "Funky Insects" thinlet dies. What a fun group of bugs to play with! I ran the dies through using watercolor paper, then watercolored them with numerous Tim Holtz/Ranger Distress and Distress Oxide Inks. They are spattered with Windsor and Newton White Gouache. They are popped up from the background using foam tape. The base of the card is watercolor paper with a frame of black cardstock. The sentiment is made up with Tim Holtz/Sizzix Alphanumeric Label Font dies, so handy to create your custom sentiments with. The little heart is from a punch from my stash of tools. The letters are mounted on a Stamp Simply Fishtail Banner sentiment die and adhered with foam tape for dimension. And, that is about as hilarious as I can get. It's good to be challenged to make you think out of the box. I should do it more often. Thanks for stopping by and taking a look!
Hello dear crafters, it's June so a new challenge started at the Country View Challenges, It's a bug's life and the lovely Jane will be your hostess this month. But before I show you my project, I would like to announce a little change here, on my blog, again I changed my name :-) A few years ago I changed the Decoration to Designs but now I decided to leave the third part. From now on, this blog is just Mistletoe Home. (If you don't know why Mistletoe, and you are curious, please read my CV here.) Now let's start the tutorial! I cut out the bug from black cardstock, using the Sizzix Thinlits die, Geo Insects by Tim Holtz (664180). I took a Yupo paper, some greenish, blueish alcohol inks and a bottle of Blending Solution and made a colour melange. I placed my bug to the coloured paper and I glued it on. After drying, I cut off the excess. I took a 300 gsm watercolour paper and cut out a rectangle with Sizzix Thinlits die, Stacked Deckle (662694). I covered it with diluted Antique Linen ink, then spattered with Vintage Photo ink. After drying, I spritzed with water, so the spattered stains became blurry, more vintage for me. I inked the edges of the paper with a sponge, using Vintage Photo ink. Then I cut out a rectangle with Sizzix Thinlits die, Stitched Rectangle by Tim Holtz from brown cardstock for making an underlayer. With a Sizzix Framelits die, I cut out a large rectangle from one piece of the Idea-Ology, Dapper Paper Stash (12x12). For the word, Entomology, I used the Sizzix Thinlits die, Sentiment Words by Tim Holtz (661799). If you have a project with a bug or more, please don't hesitate to join our June challenge where you can win a £20 voucher. With my card, I would like to join the: Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge: Frame it! Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge: Anything goes

Did you ever have a school assignment on entomology? I remember in elementary school we studied bugs and had to do an insect board where we pinned and identified a bunch of insects. My dad was a yard and tree man and he cut burlwood slabs on the side, so he was always finding interesting bugs and critters to show us. When I got that assignment he was so in his element! He found some of the coolest bugs out in the wood piles. So when I saw these new entomology stamps from Tim Holtz and Stampers Anonymous, I fondly remembered that assignment and all the help I got from my dad. They also made me think of all the cool insect displays on the walls off the upstairs queue in Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise. So with that in mind I set out to make some fun bug cards. Both of these cards are very simple, but show that bug cards can work for anybody, not just little boys. Congrats on Your BUG Day - features the Entomology CMS328 and Glorious Bouquet CMS325 and the frame was cut from Distressed Woodgrain paper using the Sizzix Alterations Stacked Deckle Thinlits. I used the leaf corner of the Glorious Bouquet for the large background and stamped it in Peeled Paint, then in Brushed Corduroy in spots on the smaller background. Inside the frame I stamped the script as the main background, then stamped the insects on top of it in Ground Espresso Archival Ink. I stamped them a second time on Distress MM Heavystock and then watercolored with my Distress Markers. I cut them out and popped them up for dimension. The sentiment is from Glorious Bouquet, but I cut B U and G out of the second stamping of the sentiment to cover the word big with bug just for a fun play on words. The second card features Botanical and Batik CMS327 and Entomology CMS328. The large background is the Entomology script stamped in Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink and then lightly blending in the background with the same color. The smaller background is the Botanical background stamp with several green colors applied to the stamp and then a few light sprays with water before stamping onto Distress Watercolor Paper. The background was then cut out using the Sizzix Alterations Stacked Label. I again stamped the insects onto the background with Ground Espresso Archival Ink kissed with a little Black Soot Archival and a second set for Watercoloring and cutting out to pop up for dimension. There you go! Two simple cards and all three stamp sets are available now.

Insect in a matchbox. Made with stamping and papercrafting with Tim Holtz entomology stamp set
Thinlits create dazzling detailed shapes for more creative cardmaking and papercrafting projects. These wafer-thin chemical-etched die sets are designed to cut, emboss or stencil a single sheet of cardstock, paper, metallic foil or vellum. They are simple to use, compact and portable for cutting at home or on the go. Use them for enhanced intricacy and to add a special touch of inspiration to all your projects. This die, curated by Tim Holtz is compatible with the BIGkick, Big Shot and Vagabond machines. To cut, the sandwich requires use of a pair of Cutting Pads and the machine's included Platform; when using the Essentials Platform or Solo Platform & Shim, the Extended Adapter or Solo Adapter is required. Because of their intricacy, Thinlits Dies may require up to three passes to cut. If extra ejection is needed for easier separation of the die-cut from the design, place wax paper between the Thinlits Die and your material and then cut. These dies can also emboss when the machine's included Platform is combined with an Impressions Pad and Silicone Rubber sheet. The diagrams on the Platform offer easy guidelines about how to make the perfect Sizzix sandwich. To stencil, place the die over desired material and apply ink or chalk to the die indentations. This technique can be used alone or to enhance embossed designs. This set includes a handy storage envelope. For easy identification, trim off the packaging front flap, keep and slip into the envelope. Includes 4 dies, approx. 3.125 x 1.625 to 3.625 x 3.25 inches.

Hello everyone! Today I'm sharing the first of my Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 2 projects. If you missed his YouTube Launch featuring all the new dies and the incredible makes for this release you can catch up here on Tim's blog. I've created this Shaker Card using the Funky Insects and an older one, Funky Wreath. The insect's bodies were created with Ranger's Mixed Media Heavystock that was coloured with Distress Oxide Sprays and Inks. I used Worn Wallpaper Scraps to die-cut the wings and top body parts. These were lightly sanded (the Worn Wallpaper has a nice subtle texture that looks great when sanded) and the edges inked. My window for my shaker was created with the Funky Wreath. To create the shaker, I've used a craft foam sheet cut slightly smaller than my card top sheet. I use inexpensive ones from the craft store and apply my own double sided adhesive that is thinner, which is applied to both sides before die-cutting. Die-cut the wreath in the foam sheet, you are using the negative space. Position this where you want it on your card, remove the backing on the bottom and adhere this to your background paper (from the Backdrops paper pack). Fill with your sequins (Sizzix Limoncello Sequins Set), or other filling (I've even used some tiny butterflies die-cut from the Park Thinlits set (Mary Poppins). Fill your circle making sure everything is not touching the edge or it's not too full or above the foam. Cut out a piece of clear acrylic larger than the die-cut area, usually the size of the foam, peel off the backing on top of the foam sheet and stick your clear sheet on top. Make sure it's pressed down to secure it everywhere and nothing escapes. I die-cut this wreath in the centre of the Cool Kraftstock sheet and used the negative space. When I am using the negative space as my card front, I usually cut that piece slightly larger in case I mess up and it's not centred properly or I'm not sure how big I want the surrounding area, then I trim to the exact size I want. The edge was machine stitched after I decided on my exact measurements. I then die-cut the wreath again with mixed media heavystock, coloured with oxides. This paper was backed with adhesive before die-cutting. This is going to go where the wreath in the negative space was taken out. The Kraftstock was adhered on top of my shaker part, then the wreath adhered in place, matching the die-cut area. Hopefully this all makes sense! I 've added some Linen Floral tape which I machine stitched the edges before removing the backing, but it is very sticky, so some adhesive did stick to my needle. This piece went near the bottom, then a label from the Engraving Layers (lightly inked and sanded). I die-cut the word JOY from the Stretch Upper Alphanumeric Thinlits set and Warm Kraftstock (lightly sanded), adhered in the middle and a Metallic Sticker over that. My Funky Insects, along with a few leaves from the Brushstroke Floral set were all adhered to complete my card front. This was adhered to my kraft card base. Materials used: Funky Insects Thinlits set 665364, Funky Wreath Thinlits set 664434, Stretch Upper Alphanumeric Thinlits set 665206, Brushstroke Floral Thinlits set 665360, Worn Wallpaper Scraps TH94122, Warm Kraftstock Stack 94112, Cool Kraftstock Stack 94110, Layers Engraving TH94125, Metallic Sticker Book TH94134, Linen Floral Tape TH94139, Sizzix Essentials Sequins and Beads-Limoncello 664604, Backdrops Paper Volume #1 TH94117. Various colours of Distress Oxide Inks and Sprays. Double sided Adhesive Sheets Sizzix 656802, Craft Foam Sheets, clear acrylic sheet, 12 x 12 Kraft cardstock. Thanks so much for stopping by, until next time, happy crafting! Jan

Here are two tags using a technique taught by Tim Holtz in a class I attended in April. This is the 3rd technique he taught that day using his new Oxide Inks & it's so fun. I can see myself using this technique over & over. Here is the #8 Kraft Tag we did in Tim's class. The images from Stampers Anonymous Classics #1, Classics #3 & Classics #4 sets were stamped with Jet Black Archival Ink on Ranger's Distress Watercolor Paper. We smooshed Frayed Burlap Distress Ink onto a craft sheet & spritz it with water then tapped the watercolor paper into the ink. This step was repeated a few times, drying in between layers. Then we smooshed several colors of Oxide Inks (I used Spiced Marmalade, Fired Brick, Peeled Paint, Wilted Violet & Broken China) on our craft sheet. Using a Detailer Water Brush we picked up color & brushed it on the image, drying between layers. I usually use #10 tags but when I made this one I didn't have any kraft tags so I made my own with cardstock from one of Tim's 12X12 paper packs. Then using the technique Tim taught us, I stamped on watercolor paper using Stampers Anonymous Classics #3 & #4, Flower Garden, Mixed Media & Flutter with Archival Jet Black Ink. To stamp multiple flowers, I did make a few masks by stamping the flower & cutting them out. Then I used Frayed Burlap Distress Ink on the background. The images are colored with Oxide Inks (Seedless Preserves, Walnut Stain, Peeled Paint, Broken China & Spiced Marmalade) using a watercolor brush. For a little dimension, I stamped another butterfly on a scrap of watercolor paper, colored it then die cut the image & attached it over the image on the CS using Glossy Accents. I added other embellishments - Idea-ology Pen Nib, Botanical Remnant Rubs, Clippings Stickers, Crinkle ribbon & a piece of twine. We were given a label with the technique instructions to put on the back of the tag & Tim's Idea-ology Worn Binder Notebook with a set of Page Pockets to store these technique tags in. He's so generous in his classes! Hope you give it a try & TFL!
