I read this post a few days ago in which Marlana of Lil' Country Librarian was singing the praises of this tool and how it was so helpful at book fair time: The auto change counter. I remember in the days of Kindergarten-dom, the little darlings bringing their zippie-bag-'o-change and thinking, ahh, pennies! So it got me thinking about what kind of little tools come in most handy in a Family & Consumer Sciences classroom. My first thought was my SMART board. I know I didn't invent the thing but I was the first to have one at my secondary campus of 1500 students in 2005 and I did not teach again without one until I left the classroom in 2012. My teaching improved and my students were more engaged. We loved it. But then I thought, great teachers can teach without technology. After a good bit of thinking, I came to the conclusion that I think my absolute classroom must-haves are some sort of paper (I really like butcher paper or poster board), magazines and markers. They seem so simplistic, but even with a SMART board we used them in every grade I have taught and they are so versatile. I love sharing and discussing content and then letting the kids loose to create something with paper, magazines, and markers. Like this one I found on Pinterest: (I'm sorry to the owner...there was not a link for credit) We also made collages about lots of things. In Kinder it was letter collages of different fonts they found in magazines. In Personal & Family Development it was examples of emotions. And the list goes on . . . and on . . . and on . . . This one is from KidsActivitiesBlog.com. Here is the direct link to the post. If you want to inspire your older students go on Pinterest and search "Magazine Collage." There are some amazing examples. And of course, there are always tear art activities with writing prompts like this one from back in the Kinder days. We also could use paper, markers, and magazines to make brochures, informative posters, take notes (YIKES). Foldables and Interactive Notebooks have gained much popularity in the last few years and I believe it is because they area fairly simple way to incorporate an element of hands-on to the lesson with minimal and basic tools. So here's to you paper, markers and magazines -I love you! So, what is your favorite classroom tool(s)? The one's you aren't sure you could live without? Talk to you tomorrow! I recently left my job at a community mental health agency and had to say goodbye to my clients, so termination activities have been on my mind. One of my favorite activities to do with children, especially when they are terminating because they have completed therapy (as opposed to the therapist leaving), is creating a …
Certain medications may help to manage some of the symptoms of borderline personality, but there's not a lot of relevant research evidence.
On April 14th, Mayor Rahm Emanuel backed a proposal to established a 5.5 million dollar reparations fund for victims tortured by police which included electrocution, beatings, and suffocation to obtain confessions. I am honored beyond belief to have been named 'Favorite Counseling Website' by Liana Lowenstein in her November Newsletter! I'm totally blown away...I have been using Liana's material ever since I started working with children and families (many moons ago). I first discovered Liana Lowenstein's work when I started working as a counselor at Whaley Children Center. 85% of our residential and foster care children were victims of sexual abuse and to be frank, I had no idea how to help young children who experienced such horrible acts. That's when a colleague lent me her copy of Paper Dolls and
