Signed original engraving, ‘Baigneuses Sous Les Saules, 1901’ (Bathers Under The Willows) by painter and color etcher Alfredo Müller (1869-1939). Purchased at the Merrill Chase Gallery in the mid-20th century, this piece is framed in a gilt walnut frame and matted with a warm beige raw silk that has texture like fine grass cloth. The artwork has a light sepia tone (likely from age) all over with a dark charcoal etching of women bathing in a river. Signed by Müller in the right corner. Born in Livorno (Italy) in 1869, Müller worked in Paris and in Italy, where he exhibited in Florence between 1890 and 1895 and then again in 1914 to 1919, and in the Salons of Paris from 1895 to 1914. He also exhibited at the famous Exposition Universelle in 1900 where he was awarded a bronze medal. He is well-known for his color aquatints of the elegant ladies of La Belle Epoque.
