Sunflowers, 1888 Item # BAL970 Vincent van Gogh Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most famous figures in Western art. Despite never seeing the depth and breadth of his impact while living, Van Gogh's post-Impressionist works have become cultural icons in most modern societies. Known as the "quintessential tortured artist", he truly only became popular after his death, but left a strong impact on Expressionism in modern art. Through his use of bold colors, subtle contours, and striking brushwork, Van Gogh left an impact on the world like no other. From the dazzling fields of sunflowers to the brooding starry night skies, Van Gogh's works are immediately recognizable and stunningly beautiful. The Legend Grows Known as the "Redheaded Madman," Van Gogh sadly suffered many mental and physical health struggles during a very troubled life. One of his most famous works, Starry Night, was painted while he was institutionalized during a manic episode. Using his struggles to fuel his art became a signature of Van Gogh's work after his untimely death by suicide. While not achieving even a modicum of fame during his life, in death he has become almost a myth or legend to people, due to the dramatic elements of his life juxtaposed with the simple beauty of his pieces. Even through the pain and heartache endured throughout his brief life, he sought out beauty in nature and in the everyday. Capturing the fragility of life, emotion, and personality in each of his works, Van Gogh is an inspiring artist, with each work bearing his signature Post-Impressionist touches on landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, and floral studies. He has left an enduring impact that is felt through other artists' works and modern society. In this post, I take a closer look at Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers series which he painted in Paris and Arles. The series highlights van Gogh's progression in color and style. It also provides some interesting links between van Gogh and another famous artist, Paul Gauguin. In this post, I cover: Vincent van Gogh, Still Life:
Van Gogh's Sunflowers is one of his most famous works worldwide. It is a rich symphony of different shades of yellow, brown, orange, green, and blue. This series of decorative still lives of sunflowers was Van Gogh's way of impressing his friend Paul Gauguin. These still lives would adorn the walls of Gauguin's bedroom. Van Gogh started the series with great enthusiasm. He had to paint quickly because the flowers in a vase quickly wilted: ''I'm painting with the enthusiasm of a Marseille man eating bouillabaisse [Provencal fish soup], which would not surprise you if you knew I was painting large sunflowers''. Gauguin did indeed consider the paintings to be very successful, naming the sunflower as a Van Gogh trademark. In 1889, Van Gogh revisited the motif on the canvas that now hangs in the Van Gogh Museum. This duvet cover features the well-known work by Van Gogh, with strikingly lifelike sun flowers and clearly visible brush strokes. The sketched flowers add a certain depth and an artistic touch to your bedroom. The quilt cover is made of 100% cotton sateen. The cover has a chic sheen and the sateen weave makes it feel very smooth. More threads are used for a sateen weave and the material is woven much tighter. Cotton sateen is made of 100% high quality breathable cotton and is moisture-absorbent.
