Coping skills for worries, racing, and intrusive thoughts are strategies kids and teens use to handle persistent negative thoughts or memories in their minds. They rely on these skills to take charge of their thoughts and feelings, especially during exams, social situations, or when dealing with personal challenges to feel more in control. The Coping Skills For Worries, Racing, And Intrusive Thoughts handout defines three types of negative thoughts, explains where they come from, and shows a list of coping skills. Some of the strategies found on the handout include exercising, meditating, and spending time with a pet or taking a walk in nature. Using these coping skills helps kids and teens take charge of their thinking and keep their emotional well-being intact when facing worries. For example, if they listen to music when feeling overwhelmed, they can distract themselves healthily, which allows them to take a break from wrong thoughts and feel calmer. To further take charge of their thoughts, kids and teens can consider using the Letting Go of Anxious Thoughts worksheet. This worksheet prompts them to write down their worries in balloons and release them while practicing positive self-talk. *This item is an instant digital download. Use this craft and activity to teach coping strategies for anxiety, anger, stress, and other strong emotions. Kids and young adults will learn that coping strategies are a shield to help protect us from stress and strong emotions. They will complete a lesson to learn about coping strategies and then create their very own shield craft with their individualized strategies chosen. This craft includes a list of 100 unique coping strategies for kids and young adults to choose from. Why Teach Coping Strategies Coping strategies are any activity that can help calm emotions and stress. Kids and young adults may often experience difficult emotions but do not have appropriate coping strategies for dealing with those feelings. Just some of the coping strategies discussed and practiced within this resource include: listening to music, taking a walk, coloring, deep breathing, focusing on an object, using positive self-talk, practicing yoga, counting to ten, talking to a friend, and much more. How to Use Students will complete a worksheet that discusses and reviews the concept of coping strategies. Then, students will use the step-by-step directions with photos to put together their shields. Kids will choose their favorite activities from a list of 100 coping strategies, add those strategies to their shield, color it, and cut it out. After completing their craft, kids can practice those strategies, as it is essential for kids to practice those strategies when they are calm. This will allow kids to learn how to use those same strategies when they are angry, sad, frustrated, or any other strong emotion. The idea is that every student will have their own individualized coping strategies shield! Some of the strategies include: • Use positive self-talk • Write in a journal • Take a walk • Practice yoga • Think of a happy place • Slowly count to ten • Listen to music • Color or draw • Talk to someone • Read • Make a list of choices • Take 5 deep breaths • And many more!
