Continuing the architectural detail series, this studious owl is one of the many gargoyles on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis.
This owl carving, representing nighttime, is located at Bethesda Terrace in NYC's Central Park. Completed in 1863, the many carvings represent themes of the time of day or the four seasons. Modernist owl forms of cast stone. Antonovici is said to have been the closest and most favored student of Constantin Brancusi while he was living and working in Paris. Antonovici came to the US in 1951 and worked here in New York City until his death in 2002. Documentation: Signed and dated by the artist, with an inscription to the recipient of the sculptures.
