This catalogue offers four-page entries for each artist, featuring reproductions of their works, an extensive interview, and biographical material. Bishop's Spring 14 x 14( Bishop's Peak) Bishop's Summer 14 x 21(Bishop's Peak) Graceful Hill, SLO,12 x 16 Over the past year I have been lucky enough to travel to the Moro Bay and San Luis Obispo area to paint more than once. I'd like to live in the area some day because of the ocean and all the hills to paint. I took my William Wendt book, looking for his famous painting of a hill from the area and finally found it but it was covered in fog both trips.( I am pretty sure it was Hollister Peak) I found a quiet place to paint near the Poultry Science building that had a great view of Bishop's Peak. The plug of volcanic rock sticking out from the pedestal of an oak-covered base was a different geology than what I'm used to. There are gorgeous fields and marshes to paint near Los Osos and Montana D'Oro just to mention a few places I didn't get to. Up in Cambria, there is a walk along the bluff with a sign that marks the exact southern limit of the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary . I'd like to go back and paint the view of the southern end and find the northern end and paint that as well. I like painting Mt Diablo often, but painting in a new place with different hills sparks my love for painting all over again.

Northlight Books Biannual Publication series of the Best in Watercolor has just published the latest edition " Splash 11 New Directions". I am pleased that my painting "A Tangled Place" is included in this book which includes only 111 Artists who entered the competition. I usually paint panoramas and began looking in a new direction, directly in front of me as I tackled the challenge of abstracting a foreground. Amazon lets you look inside and my painting is in the samples selected. A Tangled Place 14 x 14 Carpet of Flowers 12 x 16 Available at the Epperson Gallery One of the reasons I was able to succeed with this new direction is that I was interested enough to create a series of the same theme and explore variations. Another painting in this series, Carpet of Flowers, is a part of the five watercolorists exhibit at the Epperson Gallery, Crockett, on display now through July 11th , with an opening reception June 5, 5 to 7. Other watercolorists in this exhibit include Linda Sutton, Dick Cole and Michael Reardon who all do some of the most beautiful and accomplished paintings in watercolor I have ever seen. I am thrilled to be a part of this exhibit and hope to see you at the reception.
The 25 contemporary artists featured in Art Made From Books (forthcoming from Chronicle Books) may use similar materials, but their work exhibits extraordinary range—themes that range from nostalgia and the passage of time, to history and nature, to the boundaries between sculpture, painting, and text. Communication.........I think that’s why I enjoy reading so much…and why I like to paint the figure reading. I think of it almost as a sacred meditation connecting to the long linkage of the essence of individual souls. There’s the capacity for raw honesty in writing and the possibility of true intimacy. We can be that other person or at the least know what that person is feeling and thinking. It's a door into another’s soul present and past, alive and dead. Not only are we allowed to say things in books and writing that we could never express privately or publicly but we are also available to hear secret things that one cannot say. There was a movie about CS Lewis...I forget the title. Sir Anthony Hopkins I think was CS Lewis. And he said something to the effect of "I read so I'm not alone." If I painted a solitary figure not absorbed in an event one could say she looked lonely but I dare say that all my figures though they are solitary do not look lonely.

About Thai Mainhard "My Turn" acrylic on canvas signed and dated on verso. Born and raised in Brazil with strong Italian and Spanish heritage, Thai Mainhard moved to California in 2010 and has been painting ever since she first started painting classes at the age of 10. Art has always been a big part of her life. She sells paintings to collectors in the US and internationally that appreciate her art and intuitive approach, loose brush strokes, subconscious markmaking and unique choice of colors that bring out emotions deep inside human nature. “My approach to art is raw and intuitive, each mark relying on a feeling and eternalizing it in mediums, bridging the gap from brain to the heart to ultimately make us feel connected to our spirit. It’s a faith based approach - hoping it all translates into the surface and that it somehow brings resolve, peace and hope in the midst of the chaos.”
Njideka Akunyili Crosby uses a mix of collage, drawing and painting to create large-scale artworks with an emotive punch. The artist draws viewers into her works through details within acetone-transfer prints of small photographs takes from the internet and Crosby's own photographs, in addition to magazines and advertisements. The layers, patterns, and their varying degrees of transparency create dreamlike images that move in and out of reality. In this way, the works hint at the complexities of fantasy and actuality in everyday domestic life.

Gorgeous watercolor landscape of Big Sur cliffs by California artist Doris Ann Warner (American, 1925-2010), circa 1970. Signed "Warner" lower left. Unframed. Image size, 15.25"H x 22.25"L. Doris Ann Warner began as an Abstract Expressionist painter, but was primarily known for stone carving as well as abstract female figures, which emphasized body movement through rhythmic flow of mass and line. Warner studied at the University of California Santa Cruz as well as Pietrasanta, Italy, with Professor Pasquale Martini in 1988. First achieving recognition as an abstract expressionist painter, Doris Warner discovered the world of stone carving and returned to the university for instruction in sculpting the three dimensional form. A journey to Pietra Santa, Italy, (The Mecca of sculptors), gave her a month with the Italian professor, Pasquale Martini, experiencing the Italian method of stone carving. She returned with three tons of marble and worked exclusively in that medium. The impressions and images gathered from extensive travel in Europe, Asia and Africa have inspired recent works. One of the architectural wonders of the world, The Great Stupa of Borabudur, Java, was the source of inspiration for a series of five sculptures. The five sculptures are not intended to be specifically architectonic in form and yet there is an unequivocal sense of history – frozen in time. The mysterious quality of the temple carvings are translated into bronze icons (lost-wax process) and placed on the carved marble. In addition, Doris focuses on abstracted female figures which emphasize body movement through rhythmic flow of mass and line. She usually sculpted in a series, reworking the same concept until it has been expressed as powerfully as possible.
