Instead of screeching about “holy shit I thought it was a photo,” have a look at some really fantastic hyperrealism and be educated that it exists, people do it, and it’s pretty cool. Lee Price,...
Many painters working from photographic source material employ a wide variety of techniques to arrive at a final image. This will involve anything from loose sketching beforehand to complex grids, where a photograph is translated into paint box by box. Such is not the case with British painter Nathan Walsh who instead relies on elaborate drawings reminiscent of architectural blueprints before every committing paint to canvas. This deep reverence for the underpinning geometry and perspective gives each work a sense of life that might otherwise not be present in something created with the mechanical aid of a camera or software. I hear the same old angst-ridden question: "What's the point of hyperrealism?" After 20 years of drawing realistically, I can answer that question. Read on

About The Artwork Rocket Fuel is complete! And its not just an artwork this time! Working late nights, sometimes through the whole night- coffee really is my rocket fuel. But I had to find a way to put this point across without having to write it down, so I thought to myself ‘hey, why not actually show people what I mean?’ And the Rocket Fuel handmade animation was created. This became the perfect way for me to enter the NFT space too, because I felt that just an image of my art would be too easy. Making this animation has opened a whole new world for me, and a whole new way for me to put my art out in the world. I’m very excited about this journey, I feel like it’s going to be quite interesting. Alright, back to the original artwork now. Boy, this one took time to complete. 402 hours, and a little more than 60 cups of coffee for whoever’s keeping count, but it was such an incredible learning. I know I always say that this artwork was a great learning, but it truly was! Try drawing liquid and foam with a pencil, and you’ll know what I’m talking about. Especially when the one pencil I needed for the base colour was not available anywhere, so I had to experiment and find the right new colours I could mix into it for actually making the work. But as always, it increased my knowledge. I can make so many more artworks now that I know how to work this style, how I should hold the pencil, how much I need to heat the paper, everything. Hyperrealism’s such a fun journey.
