In the late 1990s artist Janet Echelman traveled to India as a Fulbright Scholar with the intention of giving painting exhibitions around the country. She shipped her painting supplies ahead of time and landed in the fishing village of Mahabalipuram to begin her exhibitions with one major hitch: the painting supplies never arrived. While walking through the village Echelman was struck by the quality and variety of nets used by the local fisherman and questioned what it might look like if such nets were hung and illuminated in the air. Perhaps a common initial reaction to the sculptural work of artist Francesco Albano is fright. It isn't entirely clear what is in front of us, but it seems human and and it seems wrong. Albano's sculptures appear to be parts or whole human bodies that are some how deformed or mutilated. Certain parts and appendages are easily discernible while others are more difficult to identify. The sculptures shed some light on the idea of ugliness, how we apply it to our bodies, and a general uneasiness with our physical selves. Albano's artwork addresses more than an just a physical aesthetic but a larger anxiety over physical well being. See more of his sculptures after the jump.
Not sure what to say about this photo, other than WOW. Talk about a prime example of how perfect lighting can really take a photo to the next level. Just look at the detail of the light rays as they hit the ground. Fantastic!
