This blog is where I share my thoughts on therapeutic recreation, leadership, activities, and different theories on family recreation.
Living with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can present unique challenges in daily life. The constant whirlwind of thoughts, impulses, and distractions can make it difficult to focus, prioritise tasks, and manage stress. There's growing recognition of the therapeutic benefits of activities like crafting. These activities offer not only an outlet for self-expression but also cognitive and emotional benefits for individuals with ADHD. 1. Enhanced Focus and Concentration One of the hallmark symptoms of ADHD is difficulty keeping attention on tasks, especially those that are mundane or repetitive. Crafting provides a structured yet flexible activity that can engage the mind without overwhelming it. Whether it's following a knitting pattern or painting, crafting requires a certain level of concentration that can help individuals with ADHD train their focus muscles over time. 2. Stress Reduction and Anxiety Management Living with ADHD often means grappling with heightened levels of stress and anxiety. The constant bombardment of stimuli and the pressure to keep up can leave you feeling overwhelmed. Crafting offers a break from these stressors through mindfulness and relaxation. The rhythmic motions in activities like crocheting or colouring have a soothing effect on the nervous system, similar to meditation. As your attention shifts from worries to the task at hand, your cortisol levels decrease, and you get a sense of calm. 3. Boosted Self-Esteem and Confidence As you complete projects and see your skills improve over time, it fosters a sense of accomplishment and pride. This positive reinforcement can be particularly beneficial for people who may struggle with self-confidence due to their ADHD symptoms. Additionally, the creative aspect of crafting allows you to express yourself in a way that words canβt. 4. Sense of Community and Connection Crafting is often a social activity, whether it's joining a knitting circle or participating in a crafting workshop. These groups offer people with ADHD the opportunity to connect with others who share their interests and experiences. Sharing tips, collaborating on projects, and simply enjoying each other's company can foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Moreover, the non-judgmental atmosphere of crafting communities can be particularly comforting for individuals who may feel misunderstood or stigmatised due to their ADHD. Crafting has therapeutic potential for people with ADHD. From improving focus and reducing stress to boosting self-esteem and fostering connections, the benefits of crafting extend far beyond the finished product. So, whether it's picking up a paintbrush or picking up a needle and thread, consider crafting your way to a happy and peaceful tomorrow. What project will you try?

A few weeks ago I was preparing professional development for first and second year teachers in my school district. New teachers not only need the basics of classroom management, routines, procedures and relationships....but this year they also need training on how to effectively be a remote educator. The first year of teaching is difficult under normal circumstances, but this is no normal year. I feel for these first year teachers as so much extra is being added to their already overflowing plate. To acknowledge the amount of stress each new teacher is facing, I started with a What's On Your Plate? activity. This is a great activity to use with any age (youth all the way to adults)! The purpose of the activity is for participants to honor all of the issues and tasks they have on their mind. We have all heard the analogy, "My plate is really full." Which is a code phrase for, "My brain is so full, I literally can't fit any more in it!" We have all been there. We all know how stressful a full or overflowing plate can be. Whats On Your Plate? gives participants a chance to get all of those thoughts swimming around in their brains out on paper. This activity acknowledges how many responsibilities and commitments everyone has, and then allows them to set those thoughts aside and be fully present for the meeting, class period, activity, etc. See below for materials, instructions and plate example.
Use this craft and activity to teach coping strategies for anxiety, anger, stress, and other strong emotions. Kids and young adults will complete a lesson to learn about coping strategies and then create an ice pop craft with their individualized strategies chosen. This craft includes over 30 unique coping strategies for kids and young adults to choose from. This would be the perfect spring or summer activity while still focusing on learning critical skills! Why Teach Coping Strategies Coping strategies are any activity that can help calm emotions and stress. Kids and young adults may often experience difficult emotions but do not have appropriate coping strategies for dealing with those feelings. Just some of the coping strategies discussed and practiced within this resource include: listening to music, taking a walk, coloring, deep breathing, focusing on an object, using positive self-talk, practicing yoga, counting to ten, talking to a friend, and much more. How to Use Students will complete a worksheet that discusses and reviews the concept of coping strategies. To complete the craft, kids will select 2 or more coping strategies, cut out all the pieces, and glue them together. Note that step-by-step directions with photos are included to make it easy! Kids can add as many coping strategies to their ice pop to make it taller! The top of the ice pop says "I can...", encouraging kids to internalize using those strategies to help them manage emotions. After completing their craft, kids are encouraged to practice those strategies, as it is essential for kids to practice those strategies when they are calm. This will allow kids to learn how to use those same strategies when they are angry, sad, frustrated, or any other strong emotion. Alternatively, a blank version is available for kids to write in their own completely individualized strategies. Some of the strategies include: β’ Use positive self-talk β’ Write in a journal β’ Take a walk β’ Practice yoga β’ Think of a happy place β’ Slowly count to ten β’ Listen to music β’ Color or draw β’ Talk to someone β’ Read β’ Make a list of choices β’ Take 5 deep breaths β’ And many more! One of the most common issues I come across when working with children is poor self esteem. We all have times when we feel bad about ourselves. But kids are trying to find their identity. Learning what they are good at and what they aren't. Working out how they are the same and different to others and if this is important. The way we see ourselves as a child can impact how we see ourselves as an adult. Why self esteem is important Kids who feel good about themselves have the confidence to tr
