Honestly, after doing my first Half Marathon in 2020 I never expected to run another. It was such an amazing accomplishment (there were definitely tears at the finish line), but I didn't feel like I need to do it again. It was so much work! I ran it with my sister, and I knew the only reason we both made it to the finish line was having each other. So, when she signed up for the Savannah Women's Half with some friends of ours, I knew I couldn't let her do it with out me. So, I signed up. This race was completely different in terms of preparation. I felt a lot less prepared for this one. I was doing really well with my training plan until I got Covid in January. It took a long time to get my stamina back after that. And then since, it's just been a struggle to get in those high mile runs! Regardless, I really enjoyed this race! The course is 13.1 miles through all of Savannah. There is so much to look at, and it's very shaded which was great. Plus, you get to run through some famous locations, including the Savannah Banana Baseball stadium. So much fun! We had a great girls weekend, and were able to chow down on some amazing food before and after the race! Guilt free too. I won't lie, it was tough. Mile 11 specifically. But, we did it! And there were more tears at the finish line. We did regret having a 3 story AirBnb afterwards...those stairs were killer!! Recovery was not too bad either - I was hurting the next day, but by Monday it was just a little soreness. I treated myself to a pedicure and a massage which really solved all my problems. People hear the word marathon and sometimes think crazy things. Here are some things NOT to say to someone training for a marathon. 1. “Do you think you will win?”- Ummmmm no…I actually know for a fact that I will not win. I’m not being negative, I just can’t beat all 25,000 other people running. 2. “How long is the marathon you are doing? I did a 3 mile one once.”- Congrats that you ran a race. That is awesome. The marathon I am running is 26.2…because that is the distance of a marathon. 3. “Why?”- Because I can. 4. “You don’t look like a marathon runner.”- Well, you don’t look like a race car driver, but I bet you speed on occasion. 5. “All you get is a medal?”- And the ability to say I’m a marathon runner, Duh! 6. “Don’t you get tired?”- Yes, of course I get tired. Don’t you get tired after a long day at work? Now imagine that plus 15 more miles to run. 7. “How long is the swim portion of the race?”- Hopefully there won’t be a swim portion unless it rains really hard. I am running a marathon…not a triathlon. 8. “I don’t get it or understand why people do that.”- Then I guess you won’t be running a marathon 🙂 Good luck to everyone out there “in training”. You kick serious asphalt! I will “see” you at the races. I’ve been running three times a week—and cross training about twice a week—for about a year now. I’m planning to complete my first half marathon in late October. After the race, I realize I need to take a few weeks of rest and active recovery. My question is, then what? Another race wouldn't be in the works for about four months. What do I do in the meantime? Do I continue running at the same long distance and total weekly mileage that I built up to run the half? Do I cut back? Thanks for your help. - Colorado runner
