My students and I are currently in Crunch Mode… unfortunately, this does NOT mean that we spend the day doing stomach crunches or eating Crunch bars … although I wouldn’t mind a Crunch bar marathon Instead this is what we call the last few weeks before our high stakes testing begins. For most, this is also the time when anxiety levels are through the roof. Especially in my state (Florida) where student retention is decided based on test scores. Anxiety is horrible and can cause everything from stomach aches, sleepless nights, inability to think clearly and even hives! YES, I actually had a parent break out in hives one year due to stress. Although we can’t change the fact that our students have to test, we CAN help them deal with their anxiety. If you’re unsure where to start, here are 8 tips to get you started… 1. Practice Breathing Exercises In my school, we call our relaxation technique S.B.G. or STOP, BREATHE, and GO. Is your teen in the grip of test anxiety? Minimize the stress with these simple and easy-to-implement test anxiety tips for teens.
Test anxiety coping skills are ways to handle stress and worry when taking tests. Kids and teens often use techniques like deep breathing, positive thinking, and breaking tasks into smaller steps to feel better. They also manage their time well, eat healthy, and talk to teachers or counselors for support. The Test Anxiety Coping Skills handout is a helpful resource that offers kids and teens insight into recognizing and managing test anxiety effectively. With three sections, it starts by highlighting the common signs of test anxiety, then provides tips to ease it, and ends with calming techniques. Using this handout allows kids or teens to instill these skills early on and become prepared to handle test anxiety throughout their academic journey. Pairing it with the Test Anxiety Activity worksheet enhances their understanding of personal triggers and reactions, which promotes self-awareness for sustained academic success. After finishing the handout, parents and teachers can suggest a "mindful reset" activity for kids or teens. This means taking a quick break, closing their eyes, and breathing deeply while picturing a peaceful spot. For instance, they might imagine a quiet beach or a calm forest, which helps them feel refreshed and ready to focus on schoolwork again. *This item is an instant digital download. Anxiety symptoms in kids may manifest as fear, worry, irritability, or anger. This arises when they feel stressed about things that seem scary or too much to handle, which makes them react physically and emotionally. While many kids express their anxiety outwardly, some keep their worries inside, which makes it challenging for adults to notice what they're going through. The Anxiety in Children Symptoms Checklist is a tool that allows kids to identify and recognize early the signs that they may be experiencing anxiety. This checklist features a list of anxiety symptoms using a first-person point-of-view to make it more personal. A child may also write down two additional symptoms not found on the list that they experience when they feel anxious. Using this worksheet, kids can take proactive steps to manage their anxiety, seek appropriate support, and develop coping skills that promote their overall well-being. To better understand and address the root causes of their emotional distress, parents and teachers can also encourage them to use the Anxiety Triggers Worksheet. Kids who find it hard to express their emotions verbally can engage in art activities, such as drawing or finger painting after completing the worksheet. They can try to depict scenes or images that represent their emotions, such as swirling colors to express feelings of overwhelm or a safe place to evoke a sense of calmness.
